Streets of Rage 4 is a masterclass in modernizing a classic formula without losing its original identity. From a game design perspective, its biggest achievement is the combat system. It takes the simplicity of the old-school beat’em up and adds a surprising amount of depth: juggling, combo routes, enemy positioning, risk/reward mechanics with special moves, and character-specific playstyles all create a system that is easy to understand but genuinely rewarding to master. The enemy design is where the game truly shines. Encounters are built around crowd control, spacing, and reading patterns rather than simply mashing buttons. Every hit feels impactful, every animation communicates clearly, and the game constantly encourages improvement. The level design respects arcade principles while adding modern expectations: short but replayable stages, scoring incentives, multiple difficulty levels, and enough mechanical depth to keep coming back. I've been putting of getting this game forever and finally picked it up. Not sure why I waited so long. Combat interesting and deep, but not needlessly complex, and art and music are great. IF you enjoy beat em ups, an easy recommendation.
