Final Liberation: Warhammer Epic 40,000 (Classic)

Okay, useful info first, nostalgia later. A modern player probably won't like this - by today's standards it's not pretty, and it's repetitive. But if you're a Warhammer fan, I still recommend to at least watch the live-action cutscenes from this game on YouTube - in my opinion, this is as Warhammer as it gets, especially considering that this was filmed in 1997. I am not a modern player. I was thirteen when this came out and it was the first Warhammer game I've ever played. And I still think it's awesome in almost every respect. * The cutscenes are top-notch, commander Holt is absolutely epic (pun intended), the props they've built for filming are insane for the time, especially considering that this was for a game and not a movie. * The soundtrack is great, the opening theme is just mindblowing. Unfortunately, there are only a few tracks in the game, and they feel like variations of the main theme. I always felt like there was some sort of misunderstanding between the band (The Samsara Project) and the devs. This could not have been intentional. * The amount of units available in the game is pretty insane - admittedly, you won't be using most of them, but they are there. * …

Amazing blast from the past. I was shockingly bad at this as a kid in the 90's. So it was nice to avenge my childhood self finally with this game. I really enjoyed it, it was as frustrating as I remember but it's the reason I picked it up again. If you're a classic warhammer game enjoyer or played classic RTS game like the Close Combat franchise, then this might be for you. If you're a modern total war or RTS enjoyer... probably not. It will most likely evoke the rather cringy "Gah, the graphics are terrible. UNPLAYABLE. I want a refund." response. Which no one really wants to read when it's a game that'll soon be three decades old.

100% Very Good Game!

I'm afraid I can't recommend this at all. This game has one of the worst control interfaces I've ever experienced. Needing to move squads of infantry around individually is torture.

I am biased. Yes. However, this game from the late 90s still holds up to many of its modern counterparts; and it is actually better than the majority. The unit selection variety is amazing, the weapon selection is also amazing on titans, as well as the hand-drawn terrain feeling. The fact you can wipe out entire enemy infantry squads by collapsing a building on them is a fine touch for the game from the 90s. The campaign, if played on the hardest difficulty, is actually quite challenging for the first half of the game. Then it gets easier after repelling the first counter-attack, and the ork reinforcements. You can tailor the campaign to your playstyle with the unit selection, which is quite amazing. The enemy will match the battle with ~ 150% point-stronger army on the hardest difficulty. Unless you've racked up tons of artillery and air support, every battle can be challenging. I've played this over a dozen times since ~ 2003, and a new playthrough never gets boring. As for the bugs and other technical difficulties: the game runs fine without crashes, except for the end-mission cutscenes. Sometimes they can crash the game, and it occurs randomly.
