About SlavicPunk: Oldtimer

SlavicPunk: Oldtimer is an isometric shooter video game, based upon the works of Michał Gołkowski, a renown Polish science-fiction and fantasy books author. It is him who created the story of Yanus – a private investigator with a troubled past, now trying to solve an unexpected case revolving around a stolen data carrier, all this while fighting his own inner demons, the urban gangs and a nigh-omnipotent corporation responsible for the downfall of the city he used to call his own.
The game offers solid combat and movement systems, as well as a modular weapon upgrade system, thanks to which the players striding through the dark corners of the city may make every encounter feel and look different. Action-packed levels with stealth elements, hacking and environmental puzzle solving are intertwined with more slow-paced sequences of city exploration, side quests and storytelling.
A unique, inherently Slavic take on the cyberpunk world is sure to leave none indifferent thanks to its sharp, caustic sense of humour and a slightly pessimistic outlook at the neon-grey shades of the surrounding reality, at the same time providing a much needed breath of fresh air to the genre itself.
As a team, the question we asked ourselves was: what was the world going to look like in a couple of decades? How would a hypothetical Central and Eastern European city and its inhabitants differ from, say, Blade Runner ‘s L.A. or Akira’s Neo Tokyo?”.

The attempts to answer this puzzle has had a tremendous deal of influence upon the game’s artistic choices, including a mix of futuristic-esque and overly outdated technologies, the grim, brutalist architecture typical of the post-communist countries, the character’s not-so-obvious moral choices and the often crudely makeshift, yank-and-tuck character and atmosphere of an environment overpacked with people forced to cope with the uneven distribution of goods and wealth, often relying on their wits and sheer luck to make it to the next paycheck without losing their minds.

SlavicPunk story goes to show that there is more than meets the eye to this dystopian version of the future is, and it is only up to the players to discover what lies beneath the neon glow and the concrete streets – helping Yanus unravel his last case and find out just how brutal and ugly the truth may actually be.

This game seems to be the definition of style over substance. The world is interesting but quite empty. You will roam around a few streets in the main hub, see a few places that might interest you but tough luck - they are out of bounds. There are people around but their personality is thin, having at best a couple lines of dialogue. The same goes to the mechanics, they are as basic as they get. Hacking seemed interesting until I realized that it's skin deep. The graphics are quite nice but the design of the layouts gets quite repetitive. Many of the places you meet fail to really differentiate themselves. Jank? There's plenty. From streets not loading in, to enemies being either brain dead or attacking you out of nowhere, there's a bit of everything. But despite this, I would still recommend the game because.... Combat is quite nice in general and the guns feel satisfying to use. They actually tried to make a story. Sure, it reads like a cliche detective story, but it shows that some intent went into it. Somewhere, hidden in the small details in each level, one can see the devs really tried, they put some passion to it. Overall, is this game for you? If you came lo…

The achievements are bugged, the story is bad and the voice acting is terrible. If you can ignore all that - you've got yourself a "meh" run-and-gun.

This game has a great mood, solid shooting, and a few fun ideas, but it's also bereft of content. Most of its running time consists of travelling from point A to point B while popping waves of largely identical enemies. Which is fine in principle, but the game introduces pretty much all of its mechanics very early on and never evolves from there. So much so that the ending felt very abrupt. I was sitting there thinking: finally, a boss fight, something new. Maybe this was just the first hub area and the game will finally open up. Nope, roll credits, you're done. So what's here is enjoyable but feels more like a strong foundation than a fully fleshed out game. I'd still recommend it, but expect a far leaner experience compared to something like The Ascent.

I really wanted to like this game. Hell, I even pledged for it on Gamefound when it was first announced - although I admit, I was mostly doing that for the Tabletop RPG SlavicPunk: Oldtimer is an isometric shooter with some good ideas in it that is weighed down by several glaring problems: Annoying encounter design - there are essentially 6 enemy types (at least in as far as I got), 3 of whom are supremely annoying to fight. Turrets are ridiculously strong - you can't even properly get into range with your guns before you're torn to shreds. The 2 types of shield guys are just as bad, but in different ways - there is only one response: hack to stun, run behind them and shoot. That is assuming the game doesn't decide that the stunned enemy should still be able to turn to face you with their shield. Boring Weapons - the guns lack impact and don't feel particularly good to shoot. I ended up using the shotgun almost exclusively because it was the closest to actually impactful. Obtuse progression - you can buy upgrades for your guns. At least in theory. Assuming you figure out how much money you have and where you are getting it from and then find the one store that is in no way sign…

Absolutely terrible. The controls are clunky. the combat frustrating, the UI useless, information lacking and the camera is not the best. Avoid!

I try not to be negative, but there are few points that make me sad: *Enemies spawn from the air, the same attitude to civilian NPC, they run and then disappear in air *During the hacking only, good moments are this circle thing, the guard-checkpoint is a joke, you can leave 1 enemy with melee, run around any. New one will not spawn and you can beat a timer (attached video below) https://youtu.be/G2_Jzo-o9eQ?si=lHi8f0vzpHQbaida *D### dream is weird, but ok, too blurry at some points. *Where are grenades/Molotov’s/emp etc.? Grenade launcher? *I respect melee-kill animation during the time outside of conflict zones, but why not in real combat situations, I want to cut clear some parts – no, enemy on high alert all time. *Is final boss should make me scared? Could better give her some gun. Or helicopter support? *Weapon swapping animation freeze, can’t change, need to restart level. Happened 5 times. *Why I felled under the map? I could walk, inject adrenaline, shoot. But had to restart – happened 3 times *? For what reason I need to buy lvl1/2 weapon upgrade, if I can jump to lvl3 skipping it and its enough firepower? *Cars don’t explode? + *I liked a moment with police break-in i…
