About Yars: Recharged

A daring attack against the enemy homeworld, guarded by mechanical hives that pulse deadly cannons and emit flurries of swirling missiles. Shoot from range as you find pockets of safety amongst the hail of incoming fire, and then dart forward in daring forays to nibble away at the enemies defenses. Gather enough energy by destroying the enemy’s shields and you can power up your massively destructive Zorlon cannon, which sends searing blasts of golden energy into the enemy hive.

Yars: Recharged is the latest title from Adamvision Studios and SneakyBox, the team behind the Atari Recharged series, infusing elements of arcade, shoot-em up, and bullet hell into the classic's formula. Yars: Recharged requires players to remain acutely aware of visual and audio cues that hint of impending danger, and to master rhythm of each boss as they navigate increasingly complex enemy defenses, all to epic soundtrack by Megan McDuffee.

The new game marks Atari’s return to the Yars universe, which is based on Howard Scott Warshaw’s classic Yars’ Revenge. Released in 1982.

Key Features:

Arcade mode: Boss rush of 30 enemies. It’s not endless, but it’s VERY difficult to get to the end of this mode. Three hits and you die, but don’t worry, that hit-count resets when moving to the next fight.

Missions: 30 unique, challenging bosses and only one life to beat each. Like Gravitar: Recharged, there’s one global leaderboard for mission mode, so you need to be on your game. Bosses pose a challenge, so you will need to take them head on with a barrage of bullets or start with the smaller, Minor Cores first and work your way to the boss.

Power-Ups: Minor Cores will drop power-ups when attached. Shoot in all directions at once, rapid fire, explosive shots, or fire a railgun – the nature of the power up is tied to the nature of the core that dropped it.

Co-op: Yars: Recharged is a local co-op game in both arcade and mission mode, a big change from the original and a ton of fun for you and a friend.
Similar to Yars Revenge but less boring, more colorful, and now with more bullets!
The strategy behind the remake is actually well thought out, and I don't recall the original being a bullet hell, but it makes it more exciting. In Yars: Recharged you can shoot or nibble stuff just like in Yars Revenge. The graphics look great and add charm that I felt the original lacked. The new sound and music add to the experience as well. I enjoyed this one far more than the original. This is one of the better games in Atari's Recharged series. I've played through most, if not all, of Atari's Recharged series. If you're curious what I thought of the rest, you can find them on my curator page or in the full Recharged list below. Yars Revenge but with more modern graphics, reworked into a 'bullet hell' game, and controls like a twin stick shooter. Got this as part of a larger bundle. For players that have played the original game, this one's got a lot of changes: - There's additional destroyable cannons that fire at you rather than the missile. - Levels can be random in 'arcade'. - There are powerups that you get from destroying those cannons like triple shot, multishot, laser fire (damages in a straight line), etc. - The cannons are powered by Qotiles, you can see the energy beams transfer just before it fires. - There's no neutral zone. - You get three bullet hits before your Yar is destroyed (or one Swirl hit). - The Zorlon cannon is charged by these power dots that you get from destroying shields, the side cannons, and attacking the Qotile. - The Zorlon cannon requires you to 'enter it' to fire it off so you cant shoot yourself. - The Zorlon cannon has an energy bar, you can move it a bit and usually get two shots off per attempt. - You can be killed while you're 'in' the Zorlon cannon by getting hit by the Swirl. - In the later stages, there are multiple Qotiles and they each fire their own Swirls. - …

Miserable to play, there's two main issues I ran into. The first is that the player ship (bug dude?) auto-swaps to melee if any tile is in range, but does not check if those tiles are invincible. The game loves to force tight corridor missions on you later on, so standing at the edges of the unbreakable corridors will take away your gun. Also the corridor missions aren't fun to begin with, the character controller isn't made with them in mind. The second is that there's some sort of severe audio-desync that restarting does not fix. The sfx for the decently fast instant-kill projectile now starts after the projectile has been fired.

A rather fab update to a very old 2600 classic. Keeps the spirit of the original but updates it in impressive ways.

Yars' Revenge is one of the best video games of all time. This isn't quite the same game, but it hits that nostalgia itch. It's a fun, casual yet challenging bullet-hell game that has become one of my go-to ways to unwind.
