Yars: Recharged

[h2]Similar to Yars Revenge but less boring, more colorful, and now with more bullets![/h2] The strategy behind the remake is actually well thought out, and I don't recall the original being a bullet hell, but it makes it more exciting. In Yars: Recharged you can shoot or nibble stuff just like in Yars Revenge. The graphics look great and add charm that I felt the original lacked. The new sound and music add to the experience as well. I enjoyed this one far more than the original. This is one of the better games in Atari's Recharged series. Yars Revenge but with more modern graphics, reworked into a 'bullet hell' game, and controls like a twin stick shooter. Got this as part of a larger bundle. For players that have played the original game, this one's got a lot of changes: - There's additional destroyable cannons that fire at you rather than the missile. - Levels can be random in 'arcade'. - There are powerups that you get from destroying those cannons like triple shot, multishot, laser fire (damages in a straight line), etc. - The cannons are powered by Qotiles, you can see the energy beams transfer just before it fires. - There's no neutral zone. - You get three bullet hits before your Yar is destroyed (or one Swirl hit). - The Zorlon cannon is charged by these power dots that you get from destroying shields, the side cannons, and attacking the Qotile. - The Zorlon cannon requires you to 'enter it' to fire it off so you cant shoot yourself. - The Zorlon cannon has an energy bar, you can move it a bit and usually get two shots off per attempt. - You can be killed while you're 'in' the Zorlon cannon by getting hit by the Swirl. - In the later stages, there are multiple Qotiles and they each fire their own Swirls. - …

So fun! i love it! For the love of GOD. Can we have a different game mode other than 1980, do not pass go do not collect $200. Please add a check point and more levels in Yars recharged 2

Miserable to play, there's two main issues I ran into. The first is that the player ship (bug dude?) auto-swaps to melee if any tile is in range, but does not check if those tiles are invincible. The game loves to force tight corridor missions on you later on, so standing at the edges of the unbreakable corridors will take away your gun. Also the corridor missions aren't fun to begin with, the character controller isn't made with them in mind. The second is that there's some sort of severe audio-desync that restarting does not fix. The sfx for the decently fast instant-kill projectile now starts after the projectile has been fired.

A rather fab update to a very old 2600 classic. Keeps the spirit of the original but updates it in impressive ways.

Yars' Revenge is one of the best video games of all time. This isn't quite the same game, but it hits that nostalgia itch. It's a fun, casual yet challenging bullet-hell game that has become one of my go-to ways to unwind.
