Raw Metal

Raw Metal is an amazing project that puts everything its got to offer on full display as soon as you boot up the game. So why am I writing a negative review to this game which I purchased on release? Don't get me wrong it is so much better than what it was when I played it first. But on my revisit I have realized that the main incentive of this game is to utilize all of the things it offers you. Those things being: - Stealth - Combat and arguably the most important thing - Gear Here's the problem. It is a genuine hassle to even obtain gear on the standard difficulty. I am stubborn and do not feel like switching the difficulty down and played the whole game on the default difficulty. It's so much of a tedious process that I instead opted to just skip the long descents for gear and just started picking up where I left off gearless... See the problem yet? Playing gearless is genuinely fun and it makes a lot of the game more challenging in the fun way, it almost feels like everything is meant to be done gearless and itemless, that is until Sublevel B and Layer 4. The biggest gripe I have with this game if not what I just mentioned is the final 2 segments of the game. It feels like…

The player takes control of the Scavenger, a mysterious character dead set on getting to the bottom of a heavily guarded mine, Katabase 6. You must go floor by floor, sneaking, fighting, and stealing your way to the bottom of Katabase 6 in search of whatever secrets it may hide. On your descent you'll find various articles of gear, which will help you fight or sneak past the large quantity of guards populating the mine. This gear can be extracted out of the mine, so that you may better prepare yourself for your subsequent intrusions into Katabase 6. If I had to be perfectly honest, I loved this game a lot and hope the main concept of it gets fleshed out further. The aspect of scrounging for loot and progressing non-linearly by extracting said loot, gear and upgrading it by delving deeper and extracting was inherently enticing to me, although if there's anything to be said about the game, it's that the combat itself was rather one-note. That's not to say that the combat was bad, mind you, I personally felt like the combat was actually really good for a 3D Action Beat Em Up. My main gripe with it is that it didn't feel fleshed out enough, much like the rest of the game. It felt like the game was barely scratching the surface of what it could be with each mechanic, from the stealth, to the looting, the progression and the combat. It's all great concepts to combine but execution wise it could have used more deliberation and time in the oven before being released. Irrespective of that though, what we got is still pretty good and very well polished as well. From the sounds, to the music to the voice acting, everything was presented and delivered well.
