✦ AI summary

PUMP IT UP RISE offers a strong rhythm game experience that appeals to both longtime fans and newcomers to the genre, with great chart design, accessibility for keyboard players, and nostalgia-driven arcade mode content. However, players are sharply divided on the song selection, with some praising the soundtrack's freshness while others criticize recent DLC packs for repetitive composition styles and similar visual presentations. Most recommend the game to rhythm game enthusiasts and series fans, though some advise budget-conscious newcomers to explore free alternatives like StepMania first.

"Arcade Mode" plays and feels exactly like the arcade versions if that's what you want. Besides that, the features and modes unique to Rise are a lot of fun too. It runs smoothly, has a great GUI in general, all the Banya classics, quality of life improvements over the arcade game and a lot of attention to detail. If you like traditional rhythm games or PIU specifically, this is a great purchase and a very healthy way to support Andamiro. It also gets paid DLC as well as free updates now and then, which is very much appreciated.

As somebody who loves Pump It Up, this game absolutely delivers. It has a nice aesthetic, the game's responsive, the song list represents PIU's identity very well, and all in all it feels like I'm playing Pump at home even when playing on keyboard which is where the majority of my hours come from. The game feels good on my home pad as well and Half Doubles provide an opportunity to practice my Half Skillset for when I go play at a cabinet. I believe that most people who enjoy Pump It Up will be pleased with Pump It Up R!SE. The only thing to keep in mind is that Hold Notes do require you to press at the beginning every time. The exception being Arcade Tab where you can play official Single and Double Charts from the Arcade version of the game. In that tab, the game plays just like an arcade cabinet would. If you're somebody who's unfamiliar with Pump It Up, are interested but not sure, or are just looking for a new VSRG to play, I'd recommend waiting for a sale or doing a bit of research to see what the song list has to offer and making a decision then. Despite having a favourable bias towards Pump It Up and Pump It Up R!SE, I do feel like other rhythm games will better suit most…

Writing this review as someone played DDR since 2001 and switched to PIU in 2004, and tried different types of PIU emulator/simulators, official or otherwise. The bad: - This game has NO respect for faithful arcade players. The Arcade mode has less song selection than WarmUp and the command window is basically the same in both. Very different from the actual arcade counterpart. - Rise feels very much like a bad port of Stepmania, which is especially apparent from the DDR-style holds mechanics. You MUST hit the 'head' of a hold note for it to register. Then you MUST wait for the 'tail' to be completely leaving the step zone / receptor area, otherwise the last note of the hold will be registered as a Miss. This raises the difficulty of some charts where we should be able to just hold the button before the hold note is coming, but we cannot as we must hit the head. - Online requirement is weird for this type of game. What's worse is that the game sometimes tell me I have no internet while my gf is streaming a movie in the other room with no issue. - Division mode confused me. I was thinking of Half-Double charts as how it has always been in arcade since PIU's inception but in Rise, D…
