Every once in a while, a game comes along that redefines the medium. Ball Torment is not that game. What it is, however, is a deeply spiritual experience—if your idea of spirituality involves repeatedly getting flattened by physics objects while sprinting up an infinite ramp as a dead-eyed woman in yoga pants. Made in Unreal Engine (yes, really), Ball Torment is the kind of project that feels like it was either a student assignment turned fever dream, or the result of a dare in a very niche game dev Discord. The premise is elegantly simple: run up a ramp while dodging giant balls. That’s it. That’s the game. No power-ups, no checkpoints, no plot. Just you, the ramp, and the relentless judgment of gravity. And the balls. So many balls. The visuals are, let’s say, committed to a certain look—somewhere between “default asset pack” and “lost PlayStation 2 tech demo.” The animation on the protagonist is so stiff it might be motion captured from someone who's actively being tased, and the collision detection feels like it's running on vibes. I recommend this game for anyone who loves a challenge. What seems simple is actually no easy feat. I'm addicted!
