Prototype Juan: A Tale of Two Mundos

My first playthrough of Prototype Juan was enjoyable but I realized I was really loving it the second time around as a speed run. I consider myself more of a hot runner (reacting in real time) than a speed runner (methodically memorizing levels) so it was the game design choices that actually carried my speed run. No level memorization was needed as the environment already suggests where the player could go next in its branching paths with arrow icons and icons indicating whether items have been cleared in an area. This allowed me to just focus on murdering enemies, blasting through obstacles and maneuvering platforms. I believe that this is also the intended experience: Exploring and taking it slow during the first run and then going into a reactive speed mode the second time around. While Prototype Juan can be difficult in sections, it's extremely forgiving with its 999 base lives. However, most importantly for me, Prototype Juan does not overstay its welcome like many other similar games do. There's also a fun juxtaposition between 1-bit and 16-bit environments that becomes particularly comical when the soundtrack rapidly changes in one section. The whole game can be complete…

I bought and installed this game on a whim few nights ago. It was around 3:30am and I had already taken Nyquil. That last detail is important, because surprisingly I didn't fall asleep. Instead I played this game, a 16-bit, 2D, side scrolling platformer, for the next two and a half hours; all with the mental capacity of a seven year old. And it was pure bliss. This game is adorable, yet challenging, With extremely tight platforming, an actually decent story, and music that fkn slaps. Best 5 bucks I've spent all week. 8.5/10

This game is awesome!!! ...but speedrun achievements--ugh--they will be the death of me.

Great little game! Good platforming, well thought out design and a fun, short run time.

Fun, short, platformer. Has a cool story premise. The controls were a little floaty for my taste but that didn't ruin my enjoyment.

Played on OG Steam Deck without issues. Fun little game that is too chatty for its own good, annoyingly so and I almost quit the game over it but I enddd up liking it. Really hated agency being taken from no often for some dumb text. Still recommend
