What the actual ♥♥♥♥ did I just play? Kuentame is a tiny, ugly, surreal fever dream of bullet hells, ♥♥♥♥♥♥-up fairytales, strange monsters and psychological weirdness. It makes very little sense, looks absolutely bizarre and somehow manages to be oddly fascinating. Not for everyone. [/h3] Another new game from ApeHardware (yay!), [strike] haven’t finished it yet, but I think I’ve seen more than enough to write the review [/strike] EDIT: Kompleted it, what a final boss! and the ending was decent too :D In terms of gameplay, Kuentame is possibly the most accessible and least bizarre game I’ve seen from this developer. It’s a bullet-nightmare action platformer: you jump with one button, shoot with another, simple rules. The unusual aspects lie elsewhere: strange visuals, the story, the character designs, the unsettling sound, and the top-down perspective that gives platforming a 360° twist. Also worth highlighting are the boss fights, which become increasingly challenging as you deplete their HP numbers (or letters, because it's shown in Hexadecimal xD) I notice a slow but steady evolution from previous games, particularly in the new visuals with pre-rendered models, and the different mechanics in the levels, so a thumbs up it is. And as always, let me remind myself that there's a demo available to try it out.

Doesnt get stale and constantly shaking things up with new mechanics and ways to progress. Creepy-cute visuals, tight platforming, very soothing sound desingn and music. All that in a package that can be completed in one sitting. Definitely a recommend!

a wonderful short experience! gameplay-wise, it feels very thoughtfully designed. your movement and controls are limited in very particular ways that add tension while trying to balance attacking and dodging, and the game continually adds enemy types, terrains, movement effects, and other changes to gameplay to keep itself fresh. the amount of ideas presented in 3 hours was very impressive to me. my one minor gripe is that i felt some of the bosses felt like bullet sponges at times, but that isn't true of all of them (the final boss was perfectly paced imo), and they all still develop in interesting enough ways that i wasn't too bothered by this. so on gameplay alone, this is a great success and an easy rec to fans of top-down shooters. but i don't think a game like Kuentame can really be discussed without noting its art direction and story, which are the things that really make it stand out, maybe even more so than the gameplay. a mesh of fairy tale tropes and cyberpunk, wrapped up in an unsettling, surreal horror package, the character designs and the world they occupy are a delight to look at. the source of horror is also fascinating to me. the protagonist can be described as (…
