Within Skerry

Within Skerry is a short first-person psychological horror game that places atmosphere, exploration, and unsettling environmental storytelling ahead of complicated mechanics. Developed by Stanislaw Truchowski and published by TurnVex, it is designed as a concentrated horror experience that can generally be completed in around an hour. Its limited duration works in its favor, allowing the game to establish its disturbing setting quickly and maintain tension without stretching its central ideas beyond what they can comfortably support. This dev has a continuous way in all games of making puzzles too odd and time consuming and adding color coordination to something that has no business having it. I saw Queso go sideways on something similar. Along with constantly backtracking to get things done. It's just a little annoying. I also don't like doing something wrong and it's a restart. Game says playthrough is 45m-1hr. That's not anywhere close to right. I'd say minimum 2 hours and up to over 3. Looks at other reviews. Everyone is sitting on 2+ hours. No save points in a 2+ hour game is annoying. I have a kid. Edit: I've decided to not recommend this game. The flaws are too big. Thanks for making it but there is a lot of room for improvement. I'm just so annoyed I went through all these sh** puzzles to get randomly killed and told to start over. Honestly....what are we doing here? Where is the reason to do it again from the start? I just feel like these games are just kind of grinded out, with no real passion for the genre (or player, not sure). It feels like the teemu of horror gaming. These games just need better decision making and so much would be fixed where they becomes classics and not tossed aside.

The developer knows how to create tension and set up a spook. Unfortunately there can be a lot of back and forth wandering without anything happening as you try to figure out what key object goes where in order to progress. On the whole, I really like the atmosphere and the dev's style. It's quite minimalistic visually -- there's no asset clutter or things which don't belong. It's a nicely-made spooky game with a rare combo of tasteful jumpscares and an atmosphere of dread and unease. I'm looking forward to playing some of this developer's other games.

I really did try to enjoy Within Skerry but the unlike other game titles made by the same creator, this one felt janky and boring. Jump scares were rather cheap, there were a lot of plot holes left in the story and the game didn't really have closure. I got the whole haunted Epstein Island theme but Within Skerry felt like it left out a lot of things.

I'm sad to say that I was very disappointed by this game. It was one of those that when I saw it, I decided it looked like fun, and I that had to play it myself. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The scares are rather boring, and so is the story. I really do think that if they had leaned more into the story and made it interesting, it would have really elevated the whole experience. As the story stands now, its rather vague and surface level. I feel that the information they had about the story, scattered through notes and whatnot, could really have been the start of a very interesting bit of lore building about the house and the island. It's a pity that they didn't invest more time into developing it. As for the actual gameplay, it was surprisingly very boring. I'm a major wuss, admittedly, so it isn't all too difficult to make me squeal and scream like a little kid while I play scary games, but this one didn't really do that for me, strangely enough. The first few minutes in the house are scary-ish, because it's dark and unfamiliar, but once you've ran around the house searching for something you missed for like ten minutes it gets significantly less scary.…
