Golden Light

Mr. Pink may not tip. But he delivers. The best thing here is not the style. Not the meat. Not roguelite mechanics per se. Not the perhaps strongest (read: most balanced) rendition of survival horror combat I've seen - where it remains unwieldy enough for you to be uncomfortable in fights while maintaining a fair degree of aglitily and responsiveness. What matters is [i]Golden Light[/i] manages to create a dynamic environment with an ever-shifting set of rules. I'm certain there comes a time where an experienced player has seen all the new stuff the game has to offer and developed a set of habits for every situation. But due to changing rules, obscure nature of enemy behaviour and dynamic destructible environments that time can be a very, very long time coming. This kind of volatile unpredictable responsiveness of the game world which keeps to its obscure rhythms and laws imbues it with a life of its own. The world breathes, it is never static. And it's somehow not a strategy or a procedural RPG, it's a claustraphobic surreal horror. [i]Knock-Knock[/i] sort of tried something like that, but, as much as I like that game, it just feels wrong to even compare the two - [i]Golden …

Golden Light is probably one of the weirdest games I've played, and I mean that as a compliment. The atmosphere is incredibly unsettling, the environments are bizarre, and you never really know what the game is going to throw at you next. There's a constant feeling that something is fundamentally wrong with everything around you. The roguelike elements, exploration and unpredictable encounters make every run feel different, while the surreal horror aesthetic gives the whole thing a very distinctive identity. It's not for everyone, but if you like strange, disturbing games that don't explain themselves too much, this is definitely worth playing.
