As someone who’s loved the Katamari series for years, Once Upon a Katamari felt like coming home. It keeps everything that made the older games so addictive—the satisfying progression, the off-the-wall humor, and that unmistakable Katamari charm—while adding enough new ideas to make it feel fresh. Rolling through different points in history is a fun twist, and it constantly gave me those classic “I can’t believe I’m rolling this up now” moments. It’s not trying to reinvent Katamari, and honestly, I’m glad it doesn’t. Graphics ★★★★★ The colorful, playful art style is as charming as ever. Every historical setting has its own personality, and the game looks polished while staying true to the series’ iconic look. Watching your katamari grow from tiny objects to swallowing entire landscapes is still just as satisfying. HOLY PEAK
I've been wanting to play Katamari ever since I saw it on game magazines 2 decades ago. It feels like it hasn't aged a day in terms of visuals, sounds and gameplay, a testament to how timeless the formula and execution are. Actually, let's get my one complaint out of the way: the menus are unintuitive and have aged poorly, so there's that. The games has Classic tank controls (that take some time to master), but also a highly appreciated Simple control scheme that means even my daughters can enjoy playing. The writing is charming and the comedy is good. I always love the "Super Mario 64 star" style of semi-linear progression (in Katamari you collect "crowns"): it never feels like you're stuck on a difficult stage, with always plenty of challenges to try and retry, and the stages are super replayable. They add a bit of variation to the formula with different objectives, and that's more than enough to keep me coming back.
This game is great. I see know issues. You roll the ball and stick things to it and it gets bigger. It just scratches that right part of my brain.
