About Thief

✦ AI summary

Play as Garrett, a master thief navigating a corrupt city filled with rich targets and dangerous guards, where stealth, cunning, and your arsenal of tools are your only advantages. Choose your approach—sneak silently, use gadgets and arrows, or exploit the environment—as you become entangled in a revolutionary uprising that forces you to decide whether the City's fate matters more than your own survival.

Garrett, the Master Thief, steps out of the shadows into the City. In this treacherous place, where the Baron’s Watch spreads a rising tide of fear and oppression, his skills are the only things he can trust. Even the most cautious citizens and their best-guarded possessions are not safe from his reach.
As an uprising emerges, Garrett finds himself entangled in growing layers of conflict. Lead by Orion, the voice of the people, the tyrannized citizens will do everything they can to claim back the City from the Baron’s grasp. The revolution is inevitable. If Garrett doesn’t get involved, the streets will run red with blood and the City will tear itself apart.
Garrett never paid the price for anything… until now.

✦ AI summary

Players are divided on this stealth game's merits. Those who enjoy it praise the stealth mechanics, graphics, and breaking-and-entering gameplay, suggesting it's a solid experience worth picking up on sale. However, critics consistently argue it lacks the depth and fluidity of its spiritual predecessors like Dishonored and the original Thief series, feeling rigid and restrictive with weak writing, voice acting, and AI that undermines what could otherwise be an engaging stealth experience.

Even though this game is heavily inspired by Dishonored, it doesn't come anywhere near its perfection. The open world itself, the level design, and the mechanics feel so robotic and rigid that the game just doesn't flow. You constantly feel like you're being restricted by something. At times, the game feels suffocating. Instead of playing this, just play Dishonored for a second time; you'll enjoy it much more.

I forced myself through this game twice in an effort to 100% it. I do not recommend it in the slightest. From my original playthrough back when I first got it a decade ago to now, my opinion on Thief (2014) has hardly wavered. Every good thing I could say about Thief sounds like it's trying to sandwich some otherwise harsh criticisms. The plot, writing, voice acting, enemy AI - too many big parts of the game that would otherwise maybe provide a strong structure on an otherwise wobbly foundation all just shakily fall around you as you play. Multiple times I found myself asking "That was good?!" when hearing a voice line delivered; as to imply the VAs got no direction, or so little that airy, uninspired readings graced the airy, uninspired writing. A stealth game that over-relies on horror, sprinkles in jump scares, gives you a boss fight, and barely succeeds at the given circumstances of a master thief - as you nick pens, bells, and combs to scrounge enough pocket money to buy necessary equipment. If you want to turn your brain off and collect some shiny things: it's can be a fun romp on a lower difficulty. If you want to play a Thief game: do us both a favour and try an …

great stealth game, just not a good thief game. the best way i can describe it is "splinter cell in first person." the biggest issue of course is that its not an immersive sim like the other games. it does have elements of im-sim however. in short i would describe it as "thief-lite." its still a great game and worth getting on sale.
