About Styx: Master of Shadows

✦ AI summary

Sneak through a massive fantasy tower as Styx, a cunning goblin thief, using stealth, assassination, and magical amber powers to uncover your mysterious origins while stealing valuable treasures. Master multiple skill trees and create your own path through organic level design that rewards exploration and careful planning over direct combat.

Styx: Master of Shadows is an infiltration game with RPG elements taking place in a dark fantasy universe, where you sneak, steal and assassinate your way through as Styx, a Goblin two-centuries of age.

Deep inside the vertiginous and multi-layered forsaken Tower of Akenash, where Humans and Elves protect the World-Tree, source of the Amber – a powerful and magical golden sap – is hidden Styx’ chance to understand his true origin... and to make a fortune at the same time.

Prowl through the huge, miles-high Tower of Akenash, completing various missions (assassination, information recovery, etc.) and avoiding detection. Progress in the shadows, assassinate your targets in close combat, or orchestrate «accidents». RPG mechanics let you unlock new powerful skills, impressive special moves, and an optimized equipment. Amber will grant you spectacular powers such as invisibility, «amber vision», and the ability to clone yourself. Explore the levels to discover every bit of information about your past, and steal prized treasures to acquire equipment upgrades. Embrace the shadows!
  • Mission areas featuring truly organic player path-finding
  • A strong focus on hardcore stealth and infiltration: progress through the shadows with a sense of verticality, and explore to find hidden treasures
  • Upgrade your skills along six unique skill-trees to improve your stealth, assassination, and technique.
  • Distract, solve, smother and prowl with your clone
  • An intricate story full of twists and revelations

Styx: Master of Shadows is a stealth game through and through. If you're expecting action or a power fantasy, this isn't it. If you're a hack-and-slash player who likes to jump in and kill everything in your path, this is not the game for you—you should probably avoid it. Despite looking like a vicious and intimidating goblin, Styx is actually very fragile. He can't take much punishment, so avoiding direct confrontations is essential. The game encourages patience, careful planning, and staying hidden, but I found that the guards were almost too aware of their surroundings. They notice suspicious behavior quickly, making even small mistakes feel heavily punished. This creates tension, but it can also become frustrating rather than rewarding. One of my biggest issues was the lack of an active map that shows your current location. Since the levels can be confusing and enemies are constantly patrolling, it's easy to lose your bearings. Combined with the highly alert guards, navigating the environments often became more stressful than enjoyable. There are players who will appreciate the challenge and the emphasis on pure stealth, and the game certainly sticks to its vision. …

Good Style, good re-use of level design, though the limited levels are a bit disappointing overall. Having the same button for "collect", "Pickpocket", and "Hide" can cause the odd issues: the potion you wanted to grab was too far away but you've just jumped in a man-hole and now the person you followed is aware you're there... Save scumming to test stuff is a suggestion.

Good story, everything I wanted in a stealth game.

Seems like the company called 'Cyanide Studio' made a game with the idea as a story of their own DnD character. Then they wanted him to be really serious and the voice actor said ♥♥♥♥ that in a bad way. Story is really slow, starts as a flashback. Doesn't build any tension between the characters. Crashed on several occasions on test runs as well as on stream, mostly during loading screens. Made it halfway through the game and don't plan on coming back to it. Save your money for something better. Styx of Shadows should stay in the shadow realm. [[NOT RECOMMENDED]]
