TOKYO PSYCHODEMIC

I wanted to like this game. I really did. Unfortunately, it has so very much potential and completely wastes it. The premise for the game is really good, and the actual gameplay loop of analysing evidence, including live action video and audio, is a brilliant concept. Unfortunately, the game lets itself down with the execution of its narrative, cases, character development, and gameplay. Throughout every single case, until the very last mystery, the game holds your hand, taking away your control multiple times during every investigation. This also blocks you from saving, and doing any of the other optional actions you can see on screen such as changing the BGM, using the door to explore the area (barely used at all with few opportunities to actually do this) or feeding the cat. It feels infantilising and takes away from the feeling that you are actually solving a mystery yourself. Some of the cases feel very incomplete. Case 2 in particular is exceptionally short and feels incredibly unsatisfying. I was left thinking "is that it? aren't we going to find who person X was talking to in the beginning?" This is overall a good game, if a bit short (I finished it in <9 hours; maybe wait for a Steam sale to get your money's worth). I think Tokyo Psychodemic is a game that needs a bit more love. I played the demo at PAX East last year and was really interested. It isn’t perfect, but as someone who grew up on classic adventure games and has an appreciation for suspenseful narratives (like 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors or AI: The Somnium Files), Tokyo Psychodemic hit a sweet spot for me. Despite the poor reviews elsewhere, I found it to be compelling, despite its flaws. Presentation: I loved the combination of anime-style artwork with FMV segments. I usually don’t like FMV, but it made the mystery feel more like a dramatic crime thriller. The audio design is also fantastic. The sound effects were impactful and the music really set the tone. Each case in the game is bookended well with crime drama openings that set the stage and anime-style endings that release the tension. Even as a non-Japanese speaker, I found the voice acting emotionally resonant and well cast. Mostly Good Puzzles: The puzzle design is another highlight. TOKYO PSYCHODEMIC, developed by GRAVITY GAME ARISE and published by GRAVITY, takes a distinctly grounded approach to the detective genre, positioning itself less as a traditional mystery narrative and more as a procedural investigation simulator. Instead of relying on dramatic twists or stylized storytelling, it builds its identity around forensic analysis, evidence reconstruction, and the idea that even the most unusual cases can be understood through logic and careful observation. This focus gives the game a unique tone—one that feels methodical and deliberate rather than suspenseful or sensational. The game is set in a version of Tokyo still recovering from a catastrophic pandemic, where a series of strange incidents begins to surface, hinting at something beyond ordinary explanation. Players step into the role of an investigator tasked with examining these cases, not by directly experiencing events, but by piecing together what has already happened. I first played the demo of Tokyo Psychodemic at Gamescom two or three years ago, and I was instantly intrigued by its investigative gameplay and the unique blend of live-action/FMV and Live2D elements. The full game is made up of five cases/episodes, and most of them introduce new gameplay mechanics to keep things fresh. I enjoyed all of the cases, though I have to admit that the first one is definitely the strongest. While the overarching plot turned out to be a bit predictable, it was still enjoyable, and I liked the direction the story took in the fifth case, though they could have utilised character backgrounds and growths much much better (maybe/hopefully in a sequal or dlc?). The characters are well-designed and gave me the feeling that I was working alongside them to solve the mysteries. Because of that, I didn’t really mind that the game could be a bit hand-holdy at times. It's also clear that a lot of care went into the visuals, polish, and overall vibe of the game. I Liked the idea of this game but the execution left much to be desired. The story is weak, some of the clues require large leaps of logic and one specific clue I would argue wouldn't be known to the average American player as it requires knowledge of something that might be well known in Japan but would not be here (for example the ice cream truck jingle for us). Its worth playing if you get it on sale and you have time to kill but there are plenty of better detective games out there.
