About Arto

✦ AI summary

Arto is an action RPG where you restore color to a dying world by wielding the Paint Arrow and unleashing over 80 customizable colorful spells while mastering dynamic weapon-based combat. Your choices shape a branching narrative and determine whether this colorless realm finds salvation or descends further into darkness, all while uncovering the mystery of what stripped the world of its hue.

Return color and life to a colorless world in Arto, an immersive and visually stunning action RPG with in-depth combat mechanics,

Without color, the power of the six gods is withering and the world along with them. You are an Apostle to a dying god blessed with the gift of returning color to the world with every step you take. Venture into a hostile world and untangle the mystery of the cataclysm that stripped it of its color.

Utilize the Paint Arrow, a boon gifted to you by your god at the beginning of your journey. Along your journey, unlock special traits for this boon and experiment with a multitude of colorful projectile spells. Set your spells to home in on targets, splatter and knockback waves of enemies, or surround yourself with protective paint orbs. With more than 80 combinations, this deep system allows you to experiment and customize your playstyle.

Unlock a wide array of abilities such as a double and triple dash, a parry, a satisfying counterattack, and an arsenal of unique upgradeable weapons. Utilize different weapons to dictate the pace of your combat experience. Fight at close-quarters or a distance and attack slow and tactically or with blinding speed. Or swap weapons mid-combo using a radial menu and experiment with combat even further - the choice is yours.

Immerse yourself in a branching narrative where your choices will ultimately steer this dying world to salvation or into further destruction. You may be the only one who can undo the effects of the cataclysm, but you don't have to do it alone. How you handle the other apostles in their territories will affect the end of your story.
  • Overcome a variety of artfully-conceived enemies.
  • Put your combat prowess to the ultimate test and challenge optional bosses.
  • Craft your personality through a branching dialogue system.
  • Explore a world filled with environmental clues about the truth of the cataclysm.
  • Meet and instill hope in the quirky inhabitants of this world by helping them with tasks.
Keep your wits about you and ask questions, for not everyone you encounter along your journey wants you to bring color back to the world…

✦ AI summary

Arto is a striking action-adventure with an imaginative visual style where color becomes both aesthetic and mechanic, earning praise for its artistic direction and solid combat—but persistent performance issues severely hamper the experience, with frequent frame rate drops, stuttering, and crashes that make it nearly unplayable, particularly during combat sequences. Players appreciate the unique concept and visual variety but feel these technical problems undermine what could be a decent game, with some also finding the difficulty too punishing without adjustment options.

There is something endearing about walking into the scenery and seeing it getting colorful as you go by. It's a different sensation, quite unique and pretty fun to witness. But then, the game goes to 20 FPS, stutters, lags, and worst of all, slowdowns, all while enemies are rampant on your screen. This is not once, not twice, but EVERY DAMN TIME and in different scenarios too. You can see that in the TRAILERS on the store page... This is a mess of a game, so broken I couldn't even bother to continue. A game that could've been pretty good, but it's just unplayable. Second unplayable experience in a row... What the hell is going on with indie devs?

As a game, Arto is fine. The visual style is cool, with a fair bit of variety between the different areas and the combat is good enough, with just one combo and a couple different weapons you unlock here and there as well as a ranged attack. I think it had some potential, but sadly I had to stop playing because the performance is genuinely AWFUL. The game micro stutters all over the place, constantly slows down to the point that everything runs in slow motion and the graphics settings either don't save or don't make much of a difference. One of the worst-running games I played in a long time and it's not even close. It's honestly a shame how the terrible performance leaves its mark on what I think could be a decent game, but it gets to be unplayable after a while, especially in combat and thus I can't recommend it.

A fantastic soulsy experience with an artsy twist. I'd love to recommend it, but the game failed to maintain a stable frame rate (often dipping below 30fps in the grassier regions) and crashed several times over the course of my playthrough.

Love the style, However I found the game a bit too challenging to enjoy. Wished it had a difficulty slider or was a bit easier.

Arto is a striking and imaginative action-adventure experience that uses color not just as an aesthetic flourish, but as a narrative and mechanical foundation. Developed by OrionGames and published by indie.io, it immediately distinguishes itself through its visual identity—players begin in a monochrome, desolate world drained of vibrancy and life, and their mission becomes one of restoration. Instead of following a conventional heroic destiny, the protagonist’s journey emphasizes creation, healing, and artistic expression as much as combat. From the opening minutes, the game establishes a thematic connection between art, emotion, and existence, framing its world as one that has lost meaning and requires the player to rediscover it piece by piece. This concept gives Arto a unique emotional resonance, turning exploration into a celebration of transformation and revitalization. Gameplay unfolds as a fast-paced hack-and-slash adventure with RPG elements, environmental storytelling, and light puzzle solving. Players travel through distinct biomes—each governed by a different artistic philosophy, color palette, culture, and combat rhythm. These regions feel handcrafted and conceptually…
