A Game of Dwarves

To be honest, it was pretty bad when it first came out and time has done it no favours. I just did one last push to get the achievements I was missing, and it was a miserable experience. There are several block building simulators to choose from that are just better than this in almost every way. My recommendation is to save your time and your money, and avoid this game altogether.

I really love digging out tunnels in A Game of Dwarves, setting up little dwarven rooms, and watching your underground settlement grow across multiple vertical layers. I lost a few evenings to it without meaning to, which says something. That said, the game is clearly unfinished: dwarves stumble on staircases, the AI is borderline lobotomized, some Steam achievements are permanently broken due to level bugs, and the challenge basically evaporates once you're even slightly established. It's best approached as a relaxed sandbox dollhouse rather than any kind of strategy game — if you go in expecting Dungeon Keeper or Dwarf Fortress depth, you'll be disappointed fast. Grab it on a deep sale if the idea of decorating a cozy underground fort sounds appealing, but go in with low expectations.
