Narita Boy

I was suprised how good this actually was. Can recommend this to anyone who appreciates a bit of retro charm and ideally is a little bit familiar with those games personally. Looking back, I have nothing but fond memories of this game. The gameplay might have a few quirks, but is totally fine in the end for what it does. Has a lovely and emotional backstory. All in all a really nice little experience, I do not want to have missed.

Interesting concept. Controls do not feel good.

The TRON-ish retro aesthetic is just exceptional, but the gameplay lacks smootheness. I can't promise you won't ragequit or get bored from the combats and platforming, but if you won't, you'll experience a dramatic story in a retrofuturistic adventure you could finish in one sit

While Narita Boy falls flat in many aspects, it has so much sauce that I can't help but still recommend it. Yes combat is very simplistic and hitboxes are a bit wonky at times, yes platforming is more of a nuisance than an actual gameplay element, and yes the fetch quest structure produces a lot of instances of running back and forth, but this still activated some neurons in my brain that laid dormant for a good while. The artstyle is stellar, the stoundtrack is fantastically moody and the animations just ooze coolness. Even the story through the creators memories really got me good, less so the technobabble wall of texts in the digital world. It's a jank experience a lot of times, but it's still really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cool.
