its so bad that it loops to being good, only to loop to being bad again only thing remotely positive i can say is that id prolly fw the artstyle a bit if it had better lighting MAJOR PRECAUTION IF YOU TRY THE GAME: when you close it, itll sometimes be open in the background and still increase playtime stats.

Even though this is one of the weaker entries in the mainline series, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I is pretty much just another 2D Sonic game. Even if the physics were coded properly, it still suffers from the limited screen space problem that 2D Sonic games usually do. The level design was uninspired, the bosses were recycled just to give them an extra phase, and the overall density of content left much to be desired. The Hedgehogetry Stages were the best part of the package, but even that suffered from unpolished physics, keeping it from shining as much as it could have. I get that the whole point of the game was to essentially be a long-awaited sequel that returned the franchise to its roots, but isn't a few lazy remakes of a levels from Sonic 1 and 2 with new names kind of a stretch? Even as someone who fell out of the series after being such a massive fan of it for many years, I can see why this fell from grace shortly after a much better game came out in between episodes. Consider this one of the very few instances where the fans and I actually had a similar experience regarding the test of time for a game... minus the "forgetting about the initial positive reception" part.…

Physics are slow and stupid with the only way to gain speed being the ability to go from 0 to 100 miles per hour. This sounds good for a Sonic game, but there is rather tight platforming. Also the homing attack is in this game for no reason, the homing attack was introduced to aid 3D Sonic design to help alleviate potentially poor depth perception and precise platforming. This means the level design mostly just boils down to "straight line > ramp > spring > homing attack chain > straight line > level-specific gimmick > ramp" They reuse designs from older games several times over. There are only 5 worlds in the game each with 4 Acts/levels (including the boss Act) which makes the worlds feel padded out and longer than they need ot be and each of them are just reused. Splash Hill Zone is an obvious reusage of Green Hill Zone in the original Sonic 1. Casino Street Zone is an obvious reusage of Casino Night Zone in the original Sonic 2. Lost Labyrinth zone is an obvious reusage of Labyrinth Zone in the original Sonic 1. Mad Gear Zone is an obvious reusage of Metropolis Zone from Sonic 2. E.G.G. Station Zone is a boss rush of all previous final-act bosses but harder with a 24-hit garbag…

The game gets hated a LOT but it really is a good game sure their are issues mostly visual and momentum based and sometimes you clip through an enemy and get hit the achivments are also a bit unfair but its a good sonic game with original zones and gameplay.
