100th Bug Brigade

100th Bug Brigade is a surprisingly thoughtful tactical RPG that I liked much more than I expected. The premise sounds adorable because I am commanding a group of cute bugs, but the story quickly becomes much more serious as I try to defend their home from the invading Robugs. I enjoyed that contrast because the friendly visual style hides a surprisingly emotional story. The combat is turn based and focuses heavily on using each member of my team properly. Characters have different active and passive abilities, and I have to think carefully about positioning if I want to survive the tougher encounters. I especially liked the strange abilities that let me possess enemies, throw allies or sacrifice health for powerful attacks. Those options give the battles more personality than a standard tactical RPG. The battlefield itself can also change during the story. Areas can be retaken, new environmental mechanics can appear and the enemies can attack my defenses when I cannot reach them directly. Really endearing art, music and story. It's short but effective, and I do like how it worked on an AP system as opposed to something like Fire Emblem, where most actions are equal. My only complaint is that the controls are a bit superfluous-- I feel like most of those different buttons could have been condensed down into just a small handful. I felt like I was clicking much more than I'm used to for games in this genre.

No Steam achievements at all, which is disappointing for a tactical RPG with multiple battles, characters and story progression. Even with the game's short one-hour length, there were plenty of opportunities for simple achievements for completing battles, defeating bosses, using different abilities or finishing the story. It's a free game, but adding even a small achievement list would have given achievement hunters a little more incentive to play through it.

A truly charming game with gameplay that's fun yet I personally found it not hard enough (which mind you isn't necessarily a bad thing). You can really tell this game was made with love and passion and I'd love to see more from this world. Highly recommend if you're looking for a around 1h experience that's worth your time

This game is extremely charming. I'm always of the opinion we can have more insect related games. There are few minor bugs such disappearing movement titles. Regardless, I deeply enjoy worldbuilding, characters, and art style. I would love to see more of this world.
