Acolyte of the Altar

Roguelike Hearthstone meets Shadow of the Colossus. Gorgeous artwork, cool worldbuilding, interesting UI and sound design, mediocre gameplay. I wish there was a "not for me, but someone else might like it" review option. The runs are short, which is great for trying new strategies but bad for actually having any kind of build or strategy that matters. What you will get out of a given map event is unclear, you basically have to memorize all of the descriptions if you want to make meaningful choices. The cards themselves are ... fine. It plays more like a ~2015 Hearthstone or MTG core set draft than anything else I can think of, where you are looking for solid value creatures and big bombs. You will not find Slay the Spire style synergies here, combos are like "I have a guy that makes two token creatures, and a guy that pumps all creatures" or "I gain life when I deal 1 damage, so I'll draft 1 power creatures". It's fine, there's nothing mechanically wrong with it, it's just not to my taste for deckbuilders and makes the gameplay really deterministic with how the different strategies interact with the monsters. This is the kind of roguelike where, if you've played enough of the genre, you will immediately see that the amount of content is very limited and the runs will not be sufficiently different from one another. The artrwork is amazing, especially in the intro, but you play roguelikes mainly for the gameplay and exciting unlockable content, of which I feel there is very little.

Acolyte of the Altar is a dark fantasy roguelike deckbuilder that takes familiar card-battling mechanics and twists them into something far more grotesque, oppressive, and mechanically inventive. Developed and published by Black Kite Games, the game throws players into a ruined world filled with monstrous Beasts, corrupted rituals, and ancient entities demanding sacrifice. While many roguelike deckbuilders focus primarily on efficient card combos and predictable enemy encounters, Acolyte of the Altar stands out because its battles feel alive, dangerous, and constantly evolving. The game creates an atmosphere of dread that extends far beyond its visual presentation, turning every hunt into a desperate struggle against creatures that adapt and grow stronger the longer they survive. The core gameplay revolves around hunting gigantic Beasts while building powerful decks filled with creatures, spells, curses, and supernatural Gifts. I recommend it for the art of the enemies alone. What a twisted creative mind thought of to finally give a new spin on our usual final fantasy, dungeons and dragons, lord of the rings, monster fiends. The concept of your opponent not having cards and you knowing exactly what they will do for the entire fight is fun and new to me. I love roguelike card games such as Legends of Runeterra or Hearthstone dungeon runs, so this was totally up my alley. Took me a few tries to beat my first run but there was lots of different cards and powers to experience with. Difficulty modifiers after your first win adds a nice replayability, as well as unlocking stronger versions of your cards after each run.

In Feb 2026 they added fabled cards, which is one source of progression to unlock cards. Reviews prior to that had a viable complaint that's no longer true. Each boss has slightly different variations of abilities, so it's not even quite the same fight each time (ex. counterstrike that deals extra on kill vs hitting before the enemy attacks). It's a short game and you can finish a run within an hour. But, after your win it unlocks new versions of cards you won with. This gives more reason to play again, beyond simply seeing each of 3 factions. Do you risk picking a bad card late in a winning run just to see what the fabled version is? The game is nothing all that new. The bosses do vary in challenge, but it seems like every run is winnable and it's a fairly easy game. Barely a thumbs up, but older reviews don't do it justice so here's a bit of counterbalance.

Pretty good game, tbh. Could use a bit more complexity in the enemy design, but lovely either way
