Hunt the Pale Gods is a mechanically dense roguelike deckbuilder with strong Lovecraftian theming and impressive art that successfully differentiates itself from similar games through positioning-based combat and strategic depth, though its complexity and lack of resolution options present barriers for some players. Veterans of the genre praise its exceptional difficulty and rewarding tactical gameplay, while newcomers appreciate the craftsmanship and atmosphere despite the steep learning curve. Technical issues with display settings and text clarity frustrate some players attempting to experi

I paid $2 for this game during Steam's Deckbuilder's Fest and I've loved every minute. I've paid $20 or $30 on deckbuilders that don't have an ounce of the love and heart that has been poured into this game. Lovecraftian creatures and bosses have great designs. Card art is incredible. Great synergy between each Pale God deck. Seriously underappreciated game. Will easily sink many more hours into this.2 found this helpful
Hunt the Pale Gods is an impressively dark and mechanically rich roguelike deckbuilder that manages to carve out its own identity through a combination of tactical movement, oppressive cosmic horror, and highly strategic combat design. Developed and published by Nick Papageorgiou, the game throws players into a ruined world plagued by incomprehensible divine entities known as the Pale Gods. Rather than simply copying the formula established by other card-based roguelikes, the game introduces positioning-focused combat and aggressive battlefield management that make encounters feel far more dynamic than standard turn-based deckbuilders. The result is a tense and deeply rewarding experience that constantly pushes players to think carefully about every move, every card, and every risk they take. The combat system is the centerpiece of the entire game and easily its strongest feature. Battles take place on a grid where positioning matters just as much as deck construction. Enemies telegraph attacks across certain areas of the battlefield, forcing players to move strategically while balancing offense and defense at the same time. This seemingly simple addition completely changes the pa…2 found this helpful
This is a game clearly made with a lot of love by someone who is really into Lovecraftian lore as well as turn based gaming / roguelike deckbuilders. I haven't spent much time on it yet but in general it is extremely dense, as in rich in gameplay mechanics and it's gonna take a while to figure it out. Worth taking a look at if you enjoy turn based / grid based games since they're very rare in roguelike format. Also the art and atmosphere is top notch. Only issue is that it's extremely dense in terms of mechanics so be prepared to sit and try to understand what's happening.2 found this helpful
I’m not exaggerating when I say this is the most challenging roguelike deckbuilder I’ve ever encountered. Even after eight hours of gameplay, a single victory remains elusive. If you consider yourself a veteran of the genre, this is a must-play.1 found this helpful
For some reason I am not allowed to set the resolution. It is just not an option in the settings. The game also either does not support 1440p or is defaulting to something smaller. Resulting in text being blurry. I'd like to try the game, but I'm not gonna give myself a headache to do so.
