Aeon of Sands – The Trail is a roleplaying game set in a post-apocalyptic desert world. It combines real-time exploration gameplay with classic gamebooks where you create your very own non-linear story adventure.
You play the vain and clumsy Setrani, a simple clerk aspiring to a simple life. But in the post-apocalyptic world of Aeon of Sands, nothing is ever that easy... A single missing caravan will set plans in motion, and seal the fate of our unlikely hero.
What if your favorite “Choose your own Adventure” book was, instead of crumpled pages to turn and dice to throw, an epic FPP dungeon crawler?
The Kinami giant tree, a rare and precious shelter in a sea of sand around which the story evolves, and on whose colossal trunk and branches a hardy people built a whole city, Pantella.
Setrani is the main character of the story: vain and clumsy, he’s one of the young men and women who keep the Kinami tree in good health.
Setrani is a cross between a gardener and also a lowly factotum for the city government: he basically crowdfunds supplies to maintain all the tree caretakers.
A slacker and a nap taker, he’s the definition of whom you would not trust with your life.
Where is the missing caravan?!
A caravan carrying supplies and legations to a distant sister city has disappeared from the trail.
Was it a trick of its intended recipients?
Was it a dreaded nomadic tribe raid?
Or something else entirely?
Aeon of Sands’ adventuring is based on illustrated dialogues with multiple-choice: through them, the players are introduced to new situations.
Based on the actions or attitude that the players make Setrani take, new areas can be explored, while others become inaccessible, or they meet new companions or make enemies for life. But most of the time, it’s both!
The story has many different paths, locations to visit and three different endings.
What about a rugged guard, with a checkered past and a big heart? Or a crazy aged lady looking for murderous adventures? And what about Herman, the dead sandcrawler’s body? Or a bored archaeologist slash tourist with a fetish for water faucets?
City states sometime suffer the incursions of the men and women who live in nomadic tribes in the desert, always moving, always raiding other settlements, and usually in a state of constant war with each other.
Their tribes are usually composed of scavengers, who may be the only people in the whole world that understand a little of the technologies lost in time, as well as brute marauders and powerful warlocks, who bend the elements to their will.
But there might be more people, rogues and pariahs, settled in hidden havens, and if the desert teaches anything to Setrani, he must be wary of appearances.
While Setrani might be afraid of strangers, there’s no shortage of critters to really freak him out, and possibly eat him. No matter how many companions as he brings with him: the more, the merrier.
From the common sandcrawler to giant centipedes and leeches, from creatures of the underground to creatures of the sky.

This is Bob, Bob is a fashion blogger. He wears a stylish headdress made of a carved pumpkin-like red animal skull or just pottery (the jury is still out), and a sprawling necklace of sandcrawler innards, with a touch of sweet aroma of decay, Charnel No 5.
Name: Bob
Occupation: Rogue working with basic 9 to 5 contract with his employer settlement, committing routinely roguish acts of random robbery on desert travelers, but he dreams of becoming a star fashion blogger.
Greatest Skill: Perfect duckface in pictures.
Greatest Drawback: Nobody ever saw his face, on account of it being stuck inside his headdress. Also: he has no internet.

I am a 52 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing Aeon of Sands - The Trail. I am a single father to my Son, who is 14 now. My son found this game at Christmas, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So I decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. Loaded into the game world and started playing but I was stuck on what you were supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he helped me. Loved it as it was the best time had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories. Thank you <316 found this helpful

A well made first person grid based dungeon crawler made in modern times! Not only is the gameplay done well, but the setting and story are pretty neat. It even includes desirable modern features like automapping and autosaves! I really hope the developer makes more games with the same gameplay and the unique, detailed setting.4 found this helpful

Rather than relying solely on combat and loot collection, the game places equal emphasis on storytelling, exploration, and player choice. Set in a harsh desert world where civilization survives around a colossal life-giving tree, the adventure follows Setrani, an unlikely hero whose journey begins with a missing caravan and gradually expands into a far more significant quest. The game's unusual setting immediately captures attention, offering a refreshing alternative to traditional fantasy kingdoms and medieval landscapes. The story is one of the title’s strongest assets. Setrani is not the typical fearless champion found in many RPGs. He is flawed, occasionally selfish, and often overwhelmed by the situations around him. This makes him a surprisingly engaging protagonist whose growth feels natural throughout the adventure. Conversations are filled with humor, personality, and meaningful choices that can influence relationships, uncover hidden information, and alter the course of events. A nice looking DRPG let down by its writing. Its not just that the writing is bad(it is), it actively gets in the way of your enjoyment. The player character makes annoying quips, the dialogues choices feel bizarre with some of them having completely difference "voices" in the prompts, the way the story scenes flow feels schizophrenic. The game touts itself as a "gamebook" which means it also inherits the worst parts about it. After 16 hours of playtime I supposedly got the good ending in the game but I didn't understand anything about the story. Any interest or intrigue that might have been built up gets undercut by unfunny quips. The level design is on the harder side of DRPGs. You pretty much need to scour for secrets for progression and exploration feels somewhat nauseating due to combinations of repetetive tilesets, low draw distance and tiny FOV. The combat on the other hand is very braindead. I spent more healing items walking through damage zones while exploring than in all the combat encounters throughout the game. Despite its flaws I would still recommend it. Its an interesting game and well worth playing for people who are looking for a first person dunge…
