✦ AI summary

ASCII Attack is a retro-inspired arcade shooter with unique dual-hand tank controls that require a learning curve but deliver rewarding, challenging gameplay once mastered. Players praise its genuine retro aesthetic using ASCII graphics, fair difficulty balance, and nostalgic appeal, though some find the unconventional control scheme frustrating and wish for customizable keybindings. The game also includes trading cards and can cause motion sickness in some players.
The Actual Review
ASCII Attack is a top-down shooter with ASCII graphics and interesting controls, which take some time to get used to. Unlike other shooters, the movement is coordinated by both hands, whether on the controller or the keyboard. You control a tank and move around by controlling the left and right tracks individually. I have never driven a tank in reality, so I am unsure whether this is realistic or not, but certainly makes for interesting gameplay that improves with better learning of the movement. It is also a bullethell type game and requires you to do some specific dodging, and thus there is a barrel-roll function. (That I am sure is not realistic for tanks.) Realism aside, you are looking at simple ASCII art, with your battleground being old school dot matrix printer paper. The levels are set up so that you collect bits and pieces of launch codes so th…

I'll keep this review a lot more concise than my usual ramblings...because hey, this is a straightforward game and deserves a straightforward review. To wit; ASCII Attack is a simple arcade shooter that really embodies the pick-it-up-and-count-on-your-reactions gameplay of classic 80s games, and I mean that in a good way. In a world where game authors slap "retro" labels on anything they've created that is too hard because they've failed to put in the work to balance the gameplay and controls, ASCII Attack is a refreshing return to form as a game that truly embraces the retro feel. The gameplay is often challenging, but never unfair or overly punishing. Composing the protagonist (a tank) and enemies out of ASCII characters works well, and the two-color factor-feed paper backgrounds are a nice touch (they're configurable, BTW). Even the explosions are little swirls of ASCII characters. You steer your tank with the classic "Battlezone" dual joystick controls; a gamepad is highly recommended here for the full effect of what the game has to deliver. Sure, you can use a keyboard, but it's not the same. Drop the $25 on a controller if you don't have one -- you'll get a better experien…

Could be a good game if they just fixed the user interface controllers... Why make the user controls bad intentionally ? At least add in USER Assigned controls, then we can set it so we can actually play it. Otherwise: GREAT GAME ! :-D Fun to think back to GREEN BAR Paper and ASCII Art days... Terminals and Mainframe Games are so C00L ! Good Game gg

Great Combat Singleplayer game, learn advance in how to control yourself with some easy step-by-steps, the devs, have made a fun action game for who like small explosives, aim and survive in combat against other enemies in several levels! It can be a struggle sometime but absolutely recommend to try it. Tank music! I'm impressed! Rock On!!
