RPG Maker strikes again! BEKKOUAME is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. Notably, the "developer" couldn't work out how to use RPG Maker to make a JRPG (the only thing it can do, and it's terrible at it). Instead, we have a simple adventure game, more e-book than a real gaming experience, and of course as happens so often with these garbage RPG Maker asset flips, the subject is the developers imaginary anime girlfriend/waifu. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. BEKKOUAME is an unusual narrative adventure that uses a relatively simple RPG Maker framework to deliver a much stranger and more atmospheric experience than its modest presentation initially suggests. Developed by Mt.Bamboo Village and published by Pujia8 Studio, it blends exploration, action, supernatural mystery, and light horror around a setting that feels simultaneously whimsical and threatening. Rather than relying heavily on elaborate combat or progression systems, the game places its strongest emphasis on discovering the secrets of an uncanny town and understanding the peculiar characters inhabiting it. The story follows a young apprentice who dreams of becoming a traditional hairpin craftsman but eventually becomes overwhelmed by the painful routine of training and runs away. Monstro: Battle Tactics is a really unusual turn based strategy game because it takes the basic idea of a tactical RPG and removes most of the RPG stuff. I am not levelling characters, collecting loads of equipment or building some huge party. Instead, every battle is designed like a puzzle where I have to understand exactly how the units and enemy AI work and then find the right sequence of moves. Everything is deterministic, so when I lose I know that I can go back and try something different rather than blaming a random outcome. That is probably the thing I like most about it. The enemy behaviour follows rules that I can learn, and the game actually gives me information about those rules instead of hiding everything from me. Once I understand how an enemy is going to react, I can start planning around it. The undo system makes this much better because I can undo one move, go all the way back to the start of a mission or even undo after winning if I realise I could have done something better.
