Birth of a Hunter is a 2D retro pixel "Metroidvania" style platformer/shooter that's been slapped together with the godawful GameMaker Studio video game construction kit from Yoyogames. There's a sci-fi kind of theme as you bump around a somewhat large number of very low resolution 2D retro pixel environments. The game features obsolete retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. Resolution and controls are locked, so there's no way to improve the very poor visual quality or the control scheme. These flaws push this game far below minimum acceptable standards for PC. Gameplay is equally unpolished and clunky despite the effort that went into adding so many screens to the game. Jumping is particularly floaty and imprecise, making this less than enjoyable to try playing seriously. GameMaker Studio is a very poor quality game construction kit, and unsurprisingly results in products that have little to no value as games, especially when compared to the work of professional developers who create genuine products for gamers. This game just majorly disappointed me. I was excited about the idea of a randomly-generated Metroidvania as I have been itching for new MV content for the longest time. This game seemed appealing, so I snagged it. Immediately, I was slapped in the face with stacks of issues. First off, I was earraped. The music itself is decent at best, but there's no option to turn it or the sounds down, only completely off. I ended up spending my time playing in complete silence. Even if I turned my volume down, I honestly couldn't stand to listen to this. The character (badly-designed and not memorable in the slightest) controls like you're perpetually on ice, which can be a major problem if you're trying to jump up the one-wide platforms the game sprinkles into the pre-made, uninteresting, and boring to look at rooms. While I understand the control scheme is trying to replicate the feel of an NES controller, it doesn't mesh well with all the additional controls stacked on top of it. That mixed with the fact that you can't customize the controls at all gave me no incentive to aim diagonally and my wrist began to hurt after constantly swapping between running and jumping and pumping energy cell…

+ Fluid gameplay + Free - Boring scenery - Headache inducing soundtrack - No invincibility frames - Constantly getting stuck in a wall or floor - Many deathtraps thanks to the randomness. So when you start this game it has some premise, so much to explore so many thing to find, and its different every time I play. But after the 5th room you will soon think "this seems familiar". When you have to go up a room you have to constantly jump one block up to get to the next room. Backtracking is tedious and not fun if there are spikes and monsters constantly respawning in the weirdest places. And I've had in the short time I played encountered 4-5 times that I got stuck somehow in a platform or wall, making me reset the game. This game has great basis but needs so much polish that I'd recommend staying away from this game for now. There are so many games that do this too, but better.

I'd give this game a neutral review simply because is free, The randomness sometime is quite inconvenient because you don't have any clue about where to go and I had (more than once) go back multiple screens. This is very tedious and I just quit playing. Among some bugs the most annoying is getting stuck on terrain - you have to quit and load the game. Overall is ok-ish.
