About Boli

Boli was an unwanted and neglected child whose parents saw him as yet another mouth to feed.

When a rare disease befell their village and a hero was needed to venture into the wildernes to find a cure, his parents were quick to offer him as a volunteer.

Armed with only a rusty dagger and a supposedly-enchanted potato sack provided by his older brother, Boli must brave the monster-filled wilderness to retrieve a potion from the distant apothecary.

The fate of the whole village is in his hands. Can you guide him through the gauntlet and save the poor village from its terrible fate?

Boli is a retro-style JRPG with hand-drawn ASCII art. It is inspired by 1980s classics like the original Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest), early 1990s MUDs, and text-based RPGs such as Rogue and Moria. Explore the world as a solo adventurer, fighting or avoiding monsters and building up your skills and equipment to survive the treacherous monster-filled forests.

It features a soundtrack and sound effects created entirely using a vintage 1980s Yamaha TX81Z FM synthesizer.

The game includes a dark mode for those who don't love bright white. It is neither a roguelike nor a roguelite, but rather a traditional RPG.

The demo is just a gameplay demo and does not currently feature any of the story-related game elements.

To preface, I really hate being negative in Steam reviews, as evidenced by the fact that out of like 100+ I have maybe 2 or 3 that aren’t positive. But this game is rough. I don’t know. I was actually really excited to try it, and for about 10 minutes, I was having a reasonable amount of fun for what it was. And then three things happened in quick succession that just totally pushed me away. The first was the game telling you you can play with keyboard or mouse. You kinda can play with mouse, until you enter an inn or a shop, in which case you have to use the keyboard. Small annoyance, not a big deal. The second was that I got a spell called “Harm.” Sounds fine. Turns out it does literally 6x the damage my basic attacks were doing with a weapon I spent like 5 minutes farming up the gold to buy. That’s also fine, right? It probably costs like half your mana? It costs no mana. I have no idea if this is a bug, if this isn’t a bug but unintentional, or if it isn’t a bug and intentional. When this happened my mind kinda shifted and went “Oh, this is going to be one of those kinds of games…” But I tried not to be too perturbed by this overwhelmingly obvious oversight in balance of…

It was one of the games of all time. Kinda chill rpg with an ASCII aesthetic that I actually really like. Simples enough to be fun for its short duration.
