About Cecelia

Delve into the mysterious beauty of a daunting and surreal setting. Cecelia is an ephemeral, atmospheric adventure offering a captivating blend of first-person exploration, platforming, and leaning on an unlikely giant companion.

Waking up on the coast of a fantastical island laden with basalt columns, searing lava flows, and perilous cliffs, you find yourself stranded, left to unravel your presence and purpose. However, your journey is not one of solitude. You unearth a magical rock that awakens a colossal stone baby, whose origin is as mysterious as the island itself.

The giant’s size is both a challenge and an advantage, as you'll need to maneuver and use her immense stature to negotiate the challenging environment. But Cecelia is still learning, and she’ll need your help to survive the island’s hazards as well.

Each step and leap forward brings you closer to understanding the island’s secrets, and the entity within the distant, foreboding lighthouse. More than just a game, Cecelia is a journey of introspection, exploring trust and interdependence.

✦ AI summary

Cecelia is a short first-person adventure with an interesting concept and appealing visuals, but it's held back by significant technical issues including poor collision detection, AI glitches, and physics bugs that frequently cause the player character to get stuck or fall through geometry. Players appreciate the creative premise and artistic direction, yet most find the janky mechanics and lack of polish frustrating enough to outweigh those strengths, making it feel more like an unfinished student project than a polished game.

"Cecelia" is an unusual esoteric first person adventure game that feels like a student project. It's a fairly short game where you control a giant baby statue and must get it through various obstacles and tight spaces... an experience that's unfortunately ruined by lack of polish, a plethora of bugs and jankiness as your giant robot baby statue gets stuck on things it just shouldn't, and I happen to have a lot of experience with moving giant baby robot magic statues around. Ok, you got me, I don't, but you get the idea. The graphics in this game are really quite good, which at least makes the game look more appealing. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. Most "free" games on Steam aren't really free. There's usually some kind of monetisation, from nasty mobile app cash shops, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, to any other number of shady pricing schemes that could mislead gamers, but…

It was a fun, short playthrough. Pretty janky and the enemies were simple to the point of adding nothing, but it's a fun concept. I hope they either come back to refine it or expand on it, because it was good, it just could be better.

Sadly, the companion creature glitched and got stuck in the geometry. I wasn't able to progress past the maze.
