Not as expansive as the original Descenders, but it's still in early access development. Core gameplay is quite fun. Randomly generated maps mixed in with parks. The main gameplay loop is the roguelike element of going through all the stages with increasingly harder stages. Only downside to this nature is that each run can take awhile (is saving a run partway through a thing?). The series as a whole has a sensitivity to the controls that competitors (like Ubisoft's STEEP and Rider's Republic) lack. Performance on my Steamdeck is just ok whereas I turn down some graphics settings and lock the game to 40fps. Thankfully, multiplayer stutters are basically nonexistent compared to the original descenders.2 found this helpful
I really wanted to like this, but I don't. This feels like a downgrade. Buy the first one, it is a way better game.1 found this helpful
Don't let the aesthetic or presentation fool you. This is not a sports game. If you want a snowboarding sim then check out Shredders or something, even though it's not as fun as Descenders Next. Yes, this has some nods to enthusiasts of the sport with the cosmetic brands and stuff, but that's about as far as it goes. This is not a sports game. This is a downhill survival game that just happens to be using boards as the vehicle. Kinda like the first Descenders is a downhill survival game that just happens to be using bicycles. What is a downhill survival game? Make it to the bottom without dying. Simple, but incredibly intense and fun in the same way that horror games are. Graphics are good enough, can look pretty if you crank it up but if you got a mid-low rig this game will accommodate. Music is basically just drum and bass, not bad, I prefer turning it down and using my own playlists. Co-op is great, especially when playing in custom sessions, but progression like unlocking tracks for World Tour has to be done outside of custom sessions. Lots of customization to unlock. Great tracks and biomes. Tricks are fun and require real skill. Hell, a lot of this game is ski…1 found this helpful
reviewing while in early access. a really well thought out sequel to descenders. i've only scratched the surface, but the gameplay is familiar while the tricks, courses and boards add new mechanics. while i'm not completely convinced by the balancing of boss jumps (the difficulty spike on biome 4 of snow board career seems out of place). overall a solid early access title that is getting regular updates. if you liked the original, you'll like the sequel.
Great game, and only getting better with each patch
