Deserving Life

Deserving Life is a compact virtual reality escape-room experience that focuses on physical interaction, environmental observation, and straightforward puzzle solving. Developed by Lukas Paul and Gabriel Mittermair and published by Deserving Life, it originated as a student project from the Media Technology and Design program at the Hagenberg Campus of the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria. 2017 Deserving Life is a short virtual reality escape room that feels more like a small student project than a full horror game, but I still think there is something enjoyable about it. I am put into a fairly unsettling situation and have to work out how to escape by looking around the environment and figuring out what objects I can use. The game was made for room scale VR and requires tracked VR controls, so the whole experience is built around physically interacting with the space rather than simply walking around with a normal controller. The puzzles are the strongest part for me. I have to pay attention to small details, search the rooms properly and work out how different objects fit together. There are some nice moments where I find something I noticed earlier and suddenly understand what it is for. I like that the solutions are mostly based around looking carefully and experimenting instead of throwing complicated logic puzzles at me. Once I understand what the game wants, the progression feels quite natural. The atmosphere also works better than I expected. A fun little early VR game. It's very short, but it's free so it's well worth the experience. Just make sure you have a large enough room to play in, since there's no virtual locomotion. You need to physically move within the VR space.
