About Digital Eclipse Arcade: Candy Creeps

Happy Halloween! Candy Creeps is the very first entry in Digital Eclipse Arcade, a series of all-new games inspired by classic '80s arcade vibes.

Play as Elma and Harper, two tweens who may or may not have inadvertently summoned the evil Pumpking, who has swiped the whole neighborhood's Halloween candy and hidden it inside his army of tiny, adorable decorative gourds. Smash the pumpkins to find candy, then chow down. Once you're turbo-charged with sugar, bash the Pumpking until he explodes! Master four unique levels and go for a high score in one- and two-player modes.

Instructions

 • Stomp the pumpkins while avoiding enemies
 • Collect the candy that pops out
 • Get three pieces of candy to exact some Sweet Revenge!
 • While in Sweet Revenge mode, bash the Pumpking until he explodes

Hint: Bash the Pumpking while you're not in Sweet Revenge mode to force him to release more pumpkins!

Hint: Enemies can smash pumpkins too! Use this to your advantage.

Game Controls

 • Move, climb ladders: Joystick/gamepad
 • Jump: Button
 • Drop down a level: Hold down on stick/pad, press Jump
 • For local 2 player, a controller is required

Setting Controls

 • F1 through F3 control the screen effects, including CRT filter and distortion
 • F9 resets the game
 • + and - adjusts audio volume

The Story So Far…

Beware the Pumpking's wrath, my child
Each darkened Halloween
On Mischief Night, he watches all
And should your pranks be seen
A hefty toll he will exact
While naughty children sleep
He'll steal your candy, every piece
And give it to his creeps!

Elma and Harper were not the kids to get into the bad kind of mischief on Halloween. Yes, they egged people's houses, but they used cage-free eggs! And the toilet paper in the trees was always 2-ply for extra comfort. If the neighbors were unhappy, they shouldn't have given out raisins and dental floss! So it was something of a surprise to these considerate fourth-graders when the Pumpking emerged that night to take their entire candy haul (even the rare full-size bars!). Now, using only their wits, the power of sugar, and several very sharp knives, these tweens are on a mission to take back their sweet earnings.

✦ AI summary

Players praise Candy Creeps for its charming retro arcade aesthetic, tight pixel art, addictive momentum-based platforming, and faithful early 80s vibe that successfully captures classic arcade fun. Common complaints include missing features like settings menus, achievements, and online leaderboards, awkward controls like being forced to ALT+F4 to exit, limited content at only three-and-a-half levels, and the ability to farm lives which undermines the arcade challenge.

Outstanding retro arcade game, another in Digital Eclipse's little known and underrated Arcade series. This frantic platformer captures the early '80s vibe perfectly from the music to the look to the difficulty. It's fun and lighthearted but also will make you want to snap your controller over your knee. Speaking of which, the game does have controller support even though it's not listed on the store page. You do have to ALT+F4 to exit the game, though. I wish you could "enter coins" to continue from where you left off as I have no idea if there's anything beyond level 3 as that's plenty hard enough to get to already. 8.5/10

Candy Creeps is a very fun arcade game. Nice pixel art and original gameplay. There are three regular levels followed by a boss level. Beat the Pumpking and you start over with the second loop a bit more difficult. The game is a little bit flawed because apparently you can farm points and lives. Would have been nice if they had something in place to prevent farming. It would also benefit from an online leaderboard and a couple achievements.

This game is good, but it lacks several features you'd expect a regular game to have. There's no settings, there's no way to skip a level, and the game exits to Windows when you want it to open main menu. Momentum isn't too good in my opinion, but it's personal tastes, perhaps. Overall, I enjoyed the gameplay, musics and, most notably, graphics. 8/10

A horrifically fun little hop & bop arcade classic! Candy Creeps is an 80's arcade inspired, momentum based, platformer, that has you take control of the tiny teens Elma & Harper. Romp & stomp your way through 3 vividly colored and distinctly difficult levels as you pounce on pumpkins, avoid mummies, and dodge pendulums, all for the chance to take on the evil Pumpking and reclaim your stolen candy! This is a cute little game with a very charming premise and an even more charming presentation. Whats there isn't exactly plentiful or ground breaking , coming in at only 3 1/2 stages, but it is fun and does a really decent job at rekindling some of that good-old arcade classic vibes from years prior. If games like Namco's Mappy or Taito's Bubble Bobble are your cup of tea, then I think you'll find something to like here. It's not gonna set the world on fire or make anyone's top 10 list of all time, I'd imagine. But for 5 bucks, its a nice way to add just a tiny bit more holiday horror to your spooktacular-filled month in a fun and surprisingly challenging way. Happy Halloweeeeeeeeeen!
