What a niche, peculiar game. Let's start by saying that this is one of those super specific genre crossover games I've ever played. If you are a fan of professional Stacraft (including Brood War) and visual novels, this is the perfect game for you. You are Bolt, a south korean boy playing in a cheap Starcraft team who are training everyday in a small house with other people, training day and night for a breakout. You get to meet other Starcraft legends and play against them while some of your teammates might have other plans for their future. Eventually you play in some of the major leagues. The game is a love letter to Starcraft and the exotique life some of their stars live. Fortunately for everyone, the game includes a glossary for every Starcraft term or strategy to quickly understand what the characters are talking about. Most people know about the Protoss, Terran, Zerg, we need more pylons, etc, but when competitive pro meta strategies being discussed in rapid succession, the glossary is your way to keep up. Rather than treating competitive gaming as decoration for a conventional visual novel, it builds its story around the pressures, ambitions, relationships, and uncertainty associated with becoming a professional StarCraft: Brood War player. The player follows Bolt, a competitor reaching an important point in his career and questioning where he belongs within the esports world. GetMeBro! is a really fast multiplayer game built around a simple idea that I actually find pretty fun. I am running through a dangerous obstacle course while another player is trying to do the same thing, and the goal is to survive long enough to create enough distance between us. It looks like a basic platforming game at first, but the real challenge comes from having to deal with the map, collect energy and decide when to use my abilities. The post apocalyptic setting is mostly there to give the game some personality, because the actual focus is on quick reactions and trying to outplay the person on the other side. The movement is simple but takes some practice. I have to dodge blades, traps and other obstacles while keeping my character moving forward, and small mistakes can quickly turn into a loss. I like that the map is the same for both sides because it means I am not simply hoping for a better random layout. I can learn the routes, remember dangerous sections and work out where I need to be more careful.
