PLEASE GHM UNLOAD PARTS OF BIG AREAS ITS BASIC OPTIMISATION AND IT MAKES ENHANCED MAGRUS PLAYABLE Another great action game by grasshopper manufacture, directed by Suda but also Ren Yamazaki who has also taken part in the direction of KiD or NMH3. The main novelty about it is that's it's an adventure game, with character progression that makes it more and more like an rpg; the game is divided in levels with checkpoints that are interconnected through a parallel world system, can't really explain that in detail. This feels like the first ghm game where exploration really matters, as picking up objects like upgrade materials for weapons and searching for hidden badges which give passives when equipped is crucial for progressing (orange chocolate is really hard btw don't feel ashamed to pick a lower difficulty): it's a dark souls style action adventure game, which isn't necessarily a bad thing and the level design holds up. If you've played KiD, you may not be surprised to see that gun gameplay is back. However, I think it's actually worse in this game: the main thing is that some ennemies have weapoints you have to shoot at to deal big damage, however as you progress into the game …
If it wasn't for the fact that I know Suda51 did not grow up in a small town in the rust belt, I could be convinced otherwise. Nothing is more Central Pennsylvanian than never leaving your small dying town (even when hopping through space and time) AND never getting over your first crush. In the most endearing way, the story does not pull any punches with how over-the-top and wacky it can get. The core gameplay and aesthetics are amazing and the systems locked behind minigames never felt unwelcomed. I had to tweak some settings to get a smooth framerate but after that I did not have anything issues with my playthrough. This game is definitely now in my PA hall of fame along with Left 4 Dead, Night in the Woods, and Dusk.
I feel like a lot of negative reviews must say this, but I really did want to like this game. Off the bat, I loved its visual style, and I liked the bizarreness that it leaned into. Right from the start it rushes you through and puts you in the midst of the story, which is fine. It tells you about how Romeo's already fought a few versions of Juliet already, and that's cool! Kind of wish those were the bosses we ended up getting, instead of a bunch of kind of boring guys (not counting the 'Juliet' that you do get to fight). Story-wise, a frequent thing the game will do is just say state something random and outright tell you to just 'go with it', which I was happy to do, but only because I thought 'going with it' would actually take me somewhere. What it is instead is a bunch of disjointed, disconnected events that lose relevancy as quickly as they come about. I always thought it was at its strongest when it was dealing directly with Romeo and Juliet. Holding out for their next scene together was what pulled me through a lot of the honestly pretty boring zones, and for the most part their scenes together didn't disappoint. They were interesting! So, with that in mind, their …
Was a bit worried about performance after reading reviews, but it runs very smooth for me on worse hardware.. The game is pretty interesting, feels quite unique great story, good gameplay.
Insanely underrated... amazing amounts of passion in this. I have no notes. Worth the buy.
Imagine No More Heroes but in a grander scale, that's what this is. The gameplay, the "story", the narrative, the pacing. I enjoyed every second I spent on this game. Does that mean the plot makes sense? It' Suda51. Take it as you will.
