It's a great shmup. The negative mark comes from the fact that this is the console port and we need the more arcady EXA version for the same price.

Quite possibly the best use of modern dev kit usage with old skool hardware! Earthion impresses from the moment you boot up the game. I don't think I've EVER seen so many graphical aesthetic settings for a shooter. I have to say that if you are intimidated by the usual high difficulty of shooters, give this game a try as it has so many difficulty options and modes of play, that there's a little something for everyone! Lots of amazing visual elements in the assets, VERY little amounts of slowdown, despite being Sega Genesis emulation. The environments are colorful and fit perfectly with the scifi aesthetic. The ship and enemy designs are easily the strongest elements of the game's presentation! The sound by the masterful Yuzo Koshiro, as well as the music use EVERY channel of the Genesis sound hardware. The sounds are BIG and punchy, explosions bassy, voice overs are audible despite the PCM sounds being crunchy in that lovely Genesis way. There are some layering issues with the hit effects and explosions covering up enemy bullets, which older Genesis shooters fixed pretty easily so stray hits may occur, which won't be a huge issue as this game uses a shield health system instead o…

As a fan of Thunderforce IV, Contra, R-Type and other classic gems, this one hits right on the nostalgia nerve! Great action game with many epic bosses!

Very strong aesthetics and music, especially considering that the game is actually built to run on the original Sega Mega Drive with all of its limitations. However, those limitations do cause some nagging annoyances - hit feedback on both enemies and the player ship can often be difficult to discern and led to some frustrating deaths on my part. The late game missions lean pretty heavily on Shmup Mazes too, which was not a favorite choice of mine. Still, a strong addition to my personal shmup rotation. 4/5
