Evergate: Ki's Awakening

"Evergate: Ki's Awakening" is a student project from MIT. One of the first things students should be taught in game development is that 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid 1990's with dedicated 3D cards like the Voodoo3 and the ATI Rage. But the students were deliberately mistaught that it's okay to release obsolete 2D games in the 3D era of gaming... certainly any professional developer seeing a prospective new hire who doesn't even know about 3D gaming probably isn't going to give them a job. The grad students showed the world the intellectual power of MIT by making a really mediocre 2D retro platformer. As a platformer it's not the suckiest of all of them but it's no Hollow Knight, and there's no prizes for being the best looking guy in the burns ward. The platformer features a few gimmicks like crystal powers and the ability to create platforms and so on, but there's nothing here that hasn't been done before. What's the point? We also have to question what value there is for gamers on Steam when institutions flood the store with low quality 2D video game homework assignments... sure, it might make the students feel good about themselves, but this has no benefit for ga…

Yes I find the spirit kind of cute

Really liked the prologue/demo. The visuals are stunning. If you want a light magical puzzle platformer game, then this is a great way to spend your time. A solid 8/10. Would love to purchase the full game someday!
