Ancient but still very good A true Gem among the turn-based strategy games including resource management for 8 resources Having played SPARTAN on retail, I Had been trying to acquire this game and LEGION for ages but was unsuccesful so very happy to see the family of 4 appear on Steam. Many scenarios available (more than SPARTAN) and different goals for different factions Played this countless hours on retail version TIP: you can go for either a quick win with focus on the goals for your faction or delay one or more goals so the AI keeps challenging you while you go for map domination Note: Gates of Troy is very similar to SPARTAN, however has more scenarios and you have Rome and Persia as a playable factions in the Grand Campaign. Diplomacy is different and allows for vassalization of friendly nations , speeding up map domination.

Literally unplayable. crashes to desktop every time on boot. edit: tried turning down frame rate to 60 hz, game started, but once the first battle started it crashes. sad. i dont know why every other person seems to be playing fine... guess ill stick with chariots of war. just a caution you might get my experience where nothing works dec 2025, still crashes. if i could get a refund i would.

Spartan, and Spartan Gates of Troy(and Chariot of War) is the grandfathers of nowaday PC (turn-based) Strategy Games. Every Total War games, every Paradox's Europa Universalis and even RTS like Age of Empire, contains this game's DNA, in a good way. Frankly, after 20 years, you can fully enjoy this game and its mechanics without comparing to its successors. That is how good and unique it was. The only flaw(and somehow is its greatest strength) in SGoT is the battle map; which is extremely hard if you have no idea what you are doing, but becomes a piece of cake once you grasp the Roman Legionary strategy.

probably the best map-painting game about antiquity and it's not even remotely close. juggling resources in the trade panel to keep two max squad sized triarii doomstacks rolling around the map has been the most fun i've had in a while. the amount of value here is phenomenal, and it's nice to have something other than total war to play while listening to history videos. works perfectly via proton.

I really wanted to enjoy this. I loved the game way back when it was new. But the massive nostalgia can not make up for the games age. Diplomacy is nonsense. You can be attacked by someone and then when you react in defense, all your neighbors' relations crater because they are friendly. Difficulty is broken. The AI will literally not make armies to do things with on Normal. You have to play on hard or higher, and that means the AI cheats to have troops. Also the AI doesn't know how to make armies. From the beginning of the game you'll be facing swarms of weaker armies and its not interesting at all. Battles become tedious. Given how often you have to do battles the set up screen becomes awful to see. You have to set up the layout of your army over and over and over. If only you could save the set up, that alone would be an amazing improvement. The city development and management is satisfying but as it is, I don't want to play late enough into the game to see how things end up. I can not recommend this game.

highly reccomend for strategy players long games but fun
