Glory Hunters

Do not be baited by the nostalgic look, this plays like NONE of the jank-ass games of yesteryear. I appreciate the concept but the onboarding is terrible - if you're going to play this play it on the easy mode as the normal mode appears to have even less respect for your time as a player. The controls are incredibly clunky and stodgy, you can only move orthogonally. Your attacks are airy and the game cannot decide if they have hitstun or not. You get three hits, but on normal mode you can only heal in towns, and that's only if you spend currency to heal that you have to grind for, and the drop rate is slow low enough that you're going to walk into a screen, slash, then walk off again. Even worse, this game doesn't obey using the gb rules because you're pushing multiple buttons to pull up additional menus. Why does right shift pull up my health bar? Why can't I pull that menu up when I hit start or select? Baffling choices that don't match the era and don't match the tough as nails attitude either. -Usually- grinding occurs because the next task is not clear, so one performs a task inefficiently to get something done. Oozing gameboy style. A pretty 1 for 1 recreation of classic gameboy rpgs of old. The mechanics are simple as well as the story. Perhaps it evolves as the game goes on but from my short time it consisted of lots of dialogue where almost every other word is glory and using my little swing attack to kill bushes.. and sometimes robed men. I recommend this game if you have a taste gameboy juice of olde.

9.5/10 - This is a super fun Game Boy action-adventure game with a very unique progression system that will cause any achievement hunter to fall in love with the game after only a few minutes. I have loved almost every minute of it. If it weren't for a forest maze that deletes your save file if you step on the wrong spot too many times and a few grindy achievements, I would have given this a perfect 10/10. If this game had existed at the time, it could have been a serious contender to be bundled with the Game Boy instead of Tetris

A delightful Zelda-like with modern conveniences and where your path through its open world is flexible but challenging. If you want the feeling of satisfaction that comes with forging your way charming screen by charming screen and slowly conquering this realm, you gotta give this a try.

I have played this game mostly as a ROM on my Anbernic and it is an excellent throwback to the glory times (pun intended) of some of the most memorable and classic Game Boy games. The Steam port is excellent and plays really well. Graphically the game reminds me of Zelda A Link's Awakening for Game Boy and controls similarly, but the gameplay loop plays uses the concept of achievements as currency to move the game forward. There are dungeons and a huge map to explore, but no items other than your sword. Loop basically goes like this: Chop 10 bushes and get 1 glory point, advance the story the more glory points you achieve. It is grindy but rewarding, has an old-school challenge to it that is very nostalgic and addicting. Overall highly recommend this game to anyone, not just retro-game fans. The art and music are top notch, gameplay is solid and in general feels like very well made love letter to classic Game Boy games!
