About In The Black
Our Early Access Roadmap
Nuclear-Powered Space Combat
In The Black ® is an intense space combat simulator featuring singleplayer and multiplayer game modes (PvE and PvP). It is laser focused on the combat pilot experience in a future dominated by warring megacorporations. Rank up by completing contract missions and competing in BloodSport matches. Customize and upgrade your ships as you earn access to ever more advanced and lethal 23rd century space fighters. Set in our solar system 200 years in the future, players are mercenaries hired by ruthless megacorporations to fight their shadow wars for control of the system’s resources. For now the action is focused primarily in Saturn’s system, particularly around Titan, Enceladus, and the rings. There is a rich mix of combat scenarios such as Debris Sweep, The Belt, Blindspot (Pallene), Asteroid Mining Facility, Space Recon, Ship Strike, and Station Defense. There are five different flyable ship classes to suit a variety of combat styles, each with variants: the Shrike- and Kolibri-class light fighters, the Reus-class medium fighter, the Pegasus-class combat transport, and the Hyperion-class heavy fighter. Each ship has its unique characteristics, and all are multi-role capable depending on the loadout. The game’s ShipFrame Editor allows players to modify and upgrade each ship’s weapons configuration with the Hardpoint Editor and the Ship Paint Customizer offers a rich palette of options to give each ship a unique appearance. Whether you prefer a more casual control system or a full virtual pilot setup with sticks, throttles, and pedals, In The Black’s robust input system supports everything from mouse and keyboard, gamepads, Steam Deck, HOTAS and HOSAS, as well as head and eye tracking and ultrawide monitor support. The Impeller Studios team is led by industry veterans Jack Mamais (MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, Far Cry, and Crysis) and David Wessman (the X-Wing / TIE Fighter series, Blood Wake, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and Saints Row). We are hardcore gamers ourselves and we believe the best games are skill-based and intrinsically rewarding. And we really like the idea of flying nuclear-powered rockets through the rings of Saturn to engage in explosive high tech mayhem using lasers, missiles, and railguns! And thanks technical consultant and chief spacecraft designer Zach El-Hajj, PhD, In The Black ® elevates the visceral excitement of a cockpit shooter with a serious respect for science making it one of the few games to earn the Atomic Rockets Seal of Approval. We invite you to join our growing community on Steam and Discord to share your feedback and help steer the future evolution of In The Black ®.Please note: this game currently requires an Internet connection and it is an online-first experience. The core of the game is built around a shared back-end that relies on a live database. Even in solo or co-op scenarios, players are interacting with the same systems running the multiplayer experience. We completely understand the appeal of a fully offline mode, especially for a sim-style game like this, and it's something we hope to revisit in the future. Thank you for your understanding, mercs.

Short version: very good look and feel, but a bit shallow on content. Review written after Update #1 Pro's: Newtonian physics better than anything else I've played. Ship designs are actually practical spacecraft but still feel good. Interplay between the different ships is very unique and cool. Different matchups require different strategies to win. Group fights require tactics or at least some sense of BLOB to win. Flies great with only mouse and keyboard. Could make an E-sport I would actually find interesting. Con's Only five different hulls of ship currently available, with three variants each for a total of fifteen options. Progression feels slow to me given the amount of content available. It's in that mercurial "wow this could be REALLY cool!" phase where hopefully it catches on a bit more among simmers and maybe some shooter fans. Watching teams compete in this would be sick, especially if they could get the playercount up higher and we could see whole squadrons fighting. Side note: I do love that the Shrike is a nimble little sniper pod built around a railgun and not a space knife-fighter. I caught a target lacking attention at 19.8km and it felt reeeealllll good…7 found this helpful
First off -- Play The Demo!! Before you buy, play the demo to see if you like it. This is a well-executed game for an under-served niche, but not everybody enjoys this niche! In this game, momentum matters, consideration of your thrust vectors matters, all three spatial dimensions matter! I enjoy arcade sims and dogfight games like Squadrons, but sometimes I want to scratch the same itch that the space battles in The Expanse scratch. Mindfulness and planning are as important as speed and distance. (This is especially true during the missions that take place inside large interior spaces -- momentum matters, and that wall will not jump out of your way!) I highly recommend space and flight enthusiasts check out this game, it's a version of flight and combat that you don't see very often. The game is early access so it's still in development (don't expect it to be a finished product yet), but it has a good level of polish already. But please, for everyone's sake, try the demo before buying to see if you actually like it.3 found this helpful
I think they have the underlying tech for a good game working, but its not fun. The fact that its only only and I've not seen another player in 18 hours of gameplay is concerning enough, but the grindy progression is a bigger issue. This is an early access game. I'm assuming the devs want people to be able to play around with all the ships, make tons of loadouts, experiment around and find bugs and flaws. But the amount of time you need to sink into *severely* repetitive SP and MP matches to buy anything is absurd. Why would I sink 100+ hours into a shallow early access tech demo just to try the bigger ships? Its not worth your time.2 found this helpful
strong atmosphere, strong presentation, a fun experience2 found this helpful
Its not terrible for early access but it has a lot of potential. The biggest issue with it right now is the hella grindy progression but again, early access.1 found this helpful
fun! simple interface and straightforward game. controls seem complex at first but after playing for a couple of hours you get the hang of it. love the ship customization and want to unlock all of them; they have sick designs! a lot of potential in this and i'm excited to see where this goes.1 found this helpful
