King of the Streets

King of the Streets is relatively simple 2D fighter that has tons of potential, looks nice, and needs an additional year of beta-testing and tweaks. I want you to know that even though this is a 'do not recommend' and a large part of the review is negative, I actively want to see more work from the developer. The reasons I got this game are (almost) all reasons worth getting if you share them: aesthetically speaking, this is a game about a sorely under-represented, and oftentimes, misrepresented culture and people. 3D models may not be everyone's cup of tea but I genuinely love the way this game looks, especially the backgrounds and the old school CRT filter. This game also has a great OST that's perfect for a fighting game. Conceptually, there's some genuinely good ideas that, with fine tuning, would make an easy and fun little fighting game for anyone to get into. So, that's the good. I like the way it looks, and I love what it is, conceptually. The other reason I got this game is that I love supporting indie fighting game devs. It's a tough genre to design for. Fun and easy to get into. The vibes of this game are immaculate.

King of the Streets fearlessly barrows concepts explored in several old school fighting games. The King of Fighters, Street Fighter and the Mortal Kombat series all appear to have a great amount of influence on this gritty indie fighter. There also seems to be a lot of inspiration pulled from the real life bare knuckle brawls, as fights meet bloody conclusions end in close up finishers of final blows decorated in gruesome x-ray footage of bone shattering skeletal destruction. Fans of east coast hip-hop are likely to fall in love with many of the gangster rap themed characters like Sikeone and JB The War Villain. The art style presents some mildly life like fighters that are stylized with subtle touches of surreal movement. Think of those adult action figure models that you see people purchasing at anime conventions. Fighters also move and animate in a way that reminds me of the graphics engine used in the older arcade versions of Killer Instinct. The games takes place in an urbanized- hood like universe, set in a darkly portrayed version of New Zealand. I think the game is good, this includes the graphics, the animations and the feeling of the gameplay. The animations of the various martial arts are well represented, especially Boxing and Thai Boxe. I feel the developers should have focused more on martial arts and completely avoid those drug addict characters bearing weapons they put in instead. However, this inconsistency is seen in other games as well and it is not the end of the world.
