About Last Days of Lazarus

The disturbing story of a broken family

Set in a post-soviet Eastern Europe, Last Days of Lazarus tells the story of a troubled man, long estranged, returning to his childhood home after his mother’s death to spend some time with his sister Lyudmila. But as the country around him seems to fall apart, so does reality itself, with a series of unexplainable events leading him on a quest to find out more about his family’s disturbing past.

The supernatural bleeds into a post-communist nightmare

Last Days of Lazarus is a first-person adventure game with a strong narrative and rich visuals drawing its inspiration from the post soviet era with a Gothic vibe and supernatural elements. As the story unravels, you’ll meet questionable characters whose corrupted version of the truth you’ll need to navigate. With a troubled past yourself, you’ll struggle not only with solving the mysteries laid upon you but also with keeping alive any sliver of hope for salvation.

Real life influences and beliefs

Inspired by our country's history and locations, Last Days of Lazarus tells a story filled with supernatural elements of local belief, laid upon communist and post-communist struggles. In a sick society where everyone cares only about themselves and their survival, can family bonds still be upheld and cherished? And with so much propaganda and superstitions, can level headed thinking still be achieved?

Last Days of Lazarus is a polarizing indie title that acts as a classic example of a "love it or hate it" experience. The game’s biggest strength is its setting & visuals and if you appreciate ambitious, experimental storytelling and a unique aesthetic, there is a core here worth experiencing. The story mixes historical trauma, politics, and religious iconography with bizarre supernatural elements. The interior design of the family apartment is excellent which feels like a lived in, cluttered space rather than a generic game level. When the game focuses on these intimate environments, it excels at world building. The negatives where it struggles is the game is rough around the edges. The dialogue and voice performances are weak which can undercut the emotional weight of the more serious, dramatic scenes. The story feels disjointed making it more melodramatic than profound. But if you are a fan of narrative horror and value beautiful atmosphere and unique settings over polished mechanics and forgive the rough edges of an indie production, go for it. But, if you prefer tight gameplay, high quality voice acting, or a cohesive, grounded plot or get easily frustrated by clunky UI, then …

The graphics and world design are very good. Voice acting is ok. The story is kinda out there. I've never played another game quite like it. It kept me wanting to see just what would happen next. Scared the pants off me a couple times too. I enjoyed the game overall but still not sure if I like the story or not. It is definitely one of a kind and interesting. I played in VR using UEVR and it ran and looked amazing!

I had a really good time with this one. The atmosphere is dark, strange and genuinely unsettling at times. I really enjoyed exploring the world and figuring out the puzzles. The story kept me curious all the way through. It has a few rough edges, but overall it was a really memorable experience.

Good game, even though I'm not a huge fan of religion and war themed games, I enjoyed this one.
