Magin: The Rat Project Stories

I have played countless of card games, and this is a hit and a miss. Usually, when the deck building is defining for the combat balancing, the game often have some sort of quick way of moving you back to where you left of with a different build. Which is why the the rogue-like genre is a good fit when solving such problems. An unfair enemy just allows you to repeat and try again with a different build instead of feeling unbeatable. You learn and repeat. In this game, the deck building is more story driven. You are able to change your fighting deck before a combat from your collection of cards so far, but the cards are obtained through dialogues throughout the storyline. This means that, if I somehow picked cards to build a deck that makes it impossible to beat a combat encounter, im stuck. So, how can i approach this with a different build? I can't... unless i start over again, but I dont want to go through the full storyline again to get where I'm at. If i retry the story i would then learn that i have to choose the right CARD through options, rather than story investment, and suddenly i'm detached from the story as i'm only interested in not becoming stuck. This game just sucks. The most in the fighting, not rewarding at all, either very easy or just unplayable and everything comes down to just restarting and rng-fest. Story and dialogues are also very bad sometimes confusing and feel random.

I really wanted to like the game, it had been on my wishlist forever. However, it seems just too unrefined for me to recommend. It's as if the dev had grand ideas but ran out of money and decided patch up and bandaid everything before releasing. To start, the superb voice acting and artwork really drew me into the story. I get that a game's cardplay can be a bit rough to begin with, but I got use to it. The story started off nice, and the fact that it encompassed more of the gameplay than the cardbattles helped my initial experience. Having dialog choices that affect your starting battles is a really nice choice, and I liked the +/- synergy of the swap cards. But as the game went on, the cracks started to show. The cardplay never really changed. It was the same strategy with only a handful of cards to upgrade, some being worthless due to not having enough supporting elements to play off of. The dialog started to become... worse. More quips, shallow exposition, and backstories being shoved into small interactions. People complaining about softlocks genuinely have a skill issue. They probably upgraded the basic strike to deal a WHOPPING 15 damage instead of 7 or smth The game is really great the art style is amazing and the story and lore are genuinely interesting. Can't wait to see you expand the Magin lore in future games 'cause it has a ton of potential. My only complaint is the ghost guy in the dungeons who offers you a card upgrade in exchange for a mandatory wound. I don't really see the point of taking this deal 'cause after the battle you'll almost certainly want to remove the wound that he gave you instead of upgrading another card or taking a special card. Imo if you can upgrade cards after battles this deal is almost always a waste and taking his second option a small permanent buff for the rest of the dungeon is almost always the better choice.

Good story and interesting as card game, thank for good experience, waiting for continue ;)

A really charming narrative-driven game with a beautiful art style, nice voice acting and a quite engaging story to be honest. The combat balance can be a little uneven at times, but the atmosphere, characters and presentation more than made up for it for me. Definitely worth checking out if you enjoy story-heavy indie games with a darker tone.
