About Monster Lily

Deeply Tactical ASCII Roguelike

Monster Lily, a darkly comic, deeply tactical dungeon crawler:
  • A traditional roguelike packed with unique, often surprising mechanics.
  • Built around tactical combat, item synergy, and positioning.
  • Procedural dungeons that feel hand-crafted.
  • Enemies defined by their distinctive abilities.
  • Animations & soundtrack that push ASCII to its limits.

Tactical Survival

Monster Lily rewards creativity. Mix weapons, items, and strange powers - even the less dignified kind - to survive impossible odds. Here's just a brief example of nearly 100 unique items & abilities:
  • Use a Door Toy to create a locked door, useful for escaping or trapping a horde of monsters.
  • Drink fluids that impart special powers, such as Ogre, Faerie, and Shadow.
  • Wield a Battle Fan, dealing more damage as you dance around your enemies.
  • Try the Claw, which multiplies damage with sustained hits.
  • Or, if all else fails… unleash your bladder.

Combat

Combat, like the rest of Monster Lily, is all about tactics. Success in battle depends on positioning, instincts, and seizing every chance for critical damage.

Checkpoints / Scoring

Monster Lily is hard, especially early game when there aren't many resources available. Don't give up! Every 8 levels offers a checkpoint, along with a scoring system that rewards skillful play. To see the true ending, you’ll have to make it to the end without a single death.

Keyboard Controls

Monster Lily is built for keyboard-only play in the classic roguelike style. If you haven’t played this way before, there’s a brief learning curve, but it becomes second nature fast. The Smooth Walk System makes movement easy and natural: just hold a movement key in the direction you want to go.\

Edit, since this isnt said anywhere on the page other than the little mature content description warning, this game borders heavily on being a porn game and depicts themes that can be upsetting to certain audiences - ie: forced temporary sex change, monster ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ or forced impregnation. The fact that this isnt listed on the steam page is genuinely mortifying. The game is very good do not get me wrong, but these themes are omnipresent and should be advertised properly to potential buyers, especially as a lot of them depict themes that are really out there. --------------- The game itself is really really good. Clearly inspired by brogue and innovating on that classic formula. A bit hard to recommend to complete beginners in the traditional RL genre as brogues do very little in terms of hand holding and the early game is easpecially brutal. I really like the games potion and leveling system. All enemies have in depth and adequate descriptions so no death ever feels like you got cheated. The systems interact in many ways that make it really fun to discover new combos. The dungeon generation is VERY impressive. All the levels feel unique and fun and provide many tools for varying …

Brogue, but freaky. An actually well made brogue adjacent roguelike, with a very unique setting.

Great traditional roguelike in the style of DCSS, where survival is tied less directly to health and more to the management and balancing of resources. It's also quite challenging, which is normal for the genre, but it gives you all the information you need to perform well. Its theme is very unique and its mechanics tie in with the "lewd roguelike" subgenre really well! If an objective in a game is collecting lost love letters, I had a feeling from that point that I'd like this game. In the mid game the combat leans heavily into an evocable system, where you deal most of the damage through abilities or temporary weapons which recharge on attacking enemies or exploring new areas. It's a balancing act of spending just enough resources to survive, and not too much so you have enough for the future levels. Wandering enemies, ambushes and limited field of vision means there's always uncertainty in every encounter which keeps everything interesting, and there's a food clock system with temporary "phantom" enemies that periodically spawn if you're on the same level for a while which play in well with this per-battle uncertainty. I have not seen any bugs, and the developer is still upd…
