No More Heroes 3

Man, where do I even start with this one? If there was an option between "Recommended" and "Not Recommended", I'd be picking that one fore sure, gonna put a not recommended here so whatever. idgaf This game made me appreciate NMH2 more, a game I used to hate and never recommend to anyone. The story is a mess that barely has any Kill The Past themes. TSA had a fantastic writing, how do you even downgrade from TSA writing to this sh*tshow? Travis flip-flopping from having regrets before killing any of the rivals to "I'll F*CKING KILL YOU LOL", forgetting about his traumatic experiences from 1 and 2. The constant "Sylvia, I need to talk to you." that leads to nothing. TSA teasing the grand return of Shinobu and Bad Girl, only for them to be featured in barely 5% of NMH3 story. Naomi getting turned into a "Skill Tree" pun. Juvenile somehow still being with Travis despite him killing her in TSA. Further butchering of Henry character by turning him into a complete regard because he watched Marvelslop or something. (Though this has started with TSA, SUDA just amplified it for NMH3.) The time travel multiverse capeslop ending. And yes, I get it, Travis and Bishop are into Takashi Miike …

No More Heroes 3 might be my biggest guilty pleasure yet. It's objectively a mid game, and mayhaps the weakest entry in the series so far (even worse than Travis Strikes Again in my opinion), but it somehow still manages to entertain me from start to finish. It feels like even though Suda has aired his grievances in TSA, he's still stuck with the publisher's demand and tight schedules, cuz it's apparent that this game is very, very unfinished and might be far from his original vision. Just a bit of disclaimer, this game is more of a direct sequel to Travis Strikes Again than Desperate Struggle, so play that game first. Even if it's a top-down dungeon crawler and I rated it as the second-worst NMH entry, it's still worth playing for the story alone. If you don't mind being Suda's therapist for 10 hours, it's an incredibly personal game for Suda, and gives you a lot of insights about his journey as a game developer and his frustrations with the industry, especially with EA (Damon, one of the two antagonists of NMH3, is literally based on an EA exec who ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up Shadows of the Damned's development). I cannot, in good faith, recommend this horrible PC port. I was already frustrated with the memory leaks in the previous games and having to select a whole separate build of the game in NMH2 to stop the astronaut boss from crashing the game, but at least those games had workarounds. This game stutters like crazy if you run in compatibility mode with Windows 7/8 as an administrator, and it crashes randomly if you play it with normal Windows 11 settings and capped framerates. Initially, I thought the memory leak leading to crashes was similar to the memory leaks the previous titles had. If I played NMH1 or NMH2 for longer than 4-5 hours, they would consistently crash. No biggie, right? Just set a timer, drop a save, and restart the game. I thought NMH3 had a similar limitation until I realized its leak is WAY WORSE. This game will crash about 3 hours in fairly consistently and if it doesn't, it can actually crash 5 minutes into gameplay. I dropped a save and restarted the game to reset the unofficial 3-hour timer before the next crash - only to get another UE4 "fatal error" 5 minutes into farming the bike mission in Santa Destroy after booting up the game. After completing the main campaign in the Bitter difficulty, might as well say that No More Heroes 3 has one of the tightest combat systems out of all Hack and Slash videogames I ever played. Does it get stale after a while? Yes, it really does: this problem also amplified by the uninspired designs of the local stages and some bosses that rely too much on the unique gimmicks. Does that mean it's not fun? No. Travis no longer throws punches and kicks but he can jump: now you can perform an AoE attack if enemies get too close or jump on the them to shorten the distance (this one becomes pretty much useless the moment you acquire "Screw Crusher Death Kick" which can pretty much teleport you to the enemy, additionally cancelling their attacks ((really helpful stuff)). Speaking shortly, No More Heroes 3's combat system is solid for what it is and doesn't get overambitious. It looks boring if you only watch the gameplay but when it's real deal, you have to remember to manage both of the enemies (and here's the sad thing: in the late episodes of the game some of the matches straight up turn into a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ when you have to deal with the one Leopardon, one Captain Treatment and several…
