It's a good game that is completely free. At first glance Ortus Regni looks complex but in reality the mechanics are simple and easy to learn although hard to master. The AI is also pretty decent and varied, choosing different strategies every time you play against it. This game is like a historical Game of Thrones, where you can be as pious, warlike, sneaky or noble as you wish. Also reminds me of another tv show called Last Kingdom. I had so fun with it that it even prompted me to seek out and buy a tabletop version of this game (which is hard to find but worth it). Too bad this game is no longer supported and multiplayer is no longer possible, but you can still have some fun with AI!

Ortus Regni is a strategy card game that took me a little while to properly understand, but once the basic rules started making sense I could see why the design is so different from a lot of other card games. I am playing as an Earl during the late Anglo Saxon period, trying to build an Earldom through land, castles, armies, politics and a bit of luck. There is no huge collection of cards to unlock and no need to constantly chase a bigger card pool. I build my deck from the same core set each time, which puts much more attention on the choices I make before and during the game. The deck building is one of the things I like most. I have a set of 15 different Earl card types to work with, but I only take 24 cards into my deck. That means I have to decide what sort of strategy I actually want instead of simply putting every useful card into one massive deck. I can focus more on land and armies, build around Lords and Castles, lean into the Church and Vikings, or use political cards to cause problems for an opponent.
