About Ortus Regni
AN EARLDOM AWAITS YOUR HAND.
A truly medieval card game, that is free to download in the modern world!
Ortus Regni is a new and novel card game inspired by the late Anglo-Saxon period of English history. The Late Anglo-Saxon era in English history is a time of warring Earls. Minor kings all, they claim whatever lands they can. They establish fiefs, cultivate powerful vassals, and fight and engage in endless political struggles. All the while, the Vikings roam not just the sea, but the land.
It is truly a Dark Age. Or is it?
This is Ortus Regni, “the birth of the kingdom.”
The ancient world is dead. The world is reborn. Anyone can become a king through politics and diplomacy – or by the blade. And it is always, in the end, by the blade. Will it be you?
Ortus Regni is a unique closed-deck, deck-design strategy card game. Players take the role of great Earls vying to control what will become England. Ortus Regni was inspired not only by Anglo-Saxon history, but also by the art of illuminated medieval manuscripts.

It's a good game that is completely free. At first glance Ortus Regni looks complex but in reality the mechanics are simple and easy to learn although hard to master. The AI is also pretty decent and varied, choosing different strategies every time you play against it. This game is like a historical Game of Thrones, where you can be as pious, warlike, sneaky or noble as you wish. Also reminds me of another tv show called Last Kingdom. I had so fun with it that it even prompted me to seek out and buy a tabletop version of this game (which is hard to find but worth it). Too bad this game is no longer supported and multiplayer is no longer possible, but you can still have some fun with AI!1 found this helpful
"Ortus Regni" is a CCG deckbuilder based on a physical/real world cardgame from the same producer. And as soon as I saw this was a "free" CCG I was already wound up to warn gamers all about the nasty MTX and P2W mechanics. Too bad for me, this game has none! What do you do in the game? The game involves mechanics around positioning your cards and battling other players with constructed deacks. You lay down properties/castles, populate with rulers and mercenaries, then go off and attack other players or host event cards like banquets and banners... there's a nice balance of depth and accessibility, but you'd really have to be interested in the Anglo Saxon era of today's United Kingdom to get into it. And, unfortunately, looking at the player counts, you won't. The graphics in this game are really quite good, which at least makes the game look more appealing. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, …1 found this helpful
A shame the multiplayer support has gone. Excellent game around the table and was no different here.
Stinky. Pretentious. Beautiful. Free. Also worth picking up the physical game from their website if you have friends.
