Project R2 attempts to build an engaging tactical sandbox by blending free-form exploration with structured, turn-based squad combat featuring highly customizable military drones. While the visual premise and the bleak, post-apocalyptic environmental aesthetics initially look quite promising for a quick tactical fix, spending exactly 30 minutes inside the game is more than enough to see that the execution is severely bottlenecked by heavy technical neglect.The central issue that ruins the experience almost immediately is the atrocious optimization layout. Even on high-end hardware configurations, the client suffers from extreme, jarring frame rate drops during basic movement phases and combat ability animations. When you actually get past the performance stutters, the core gameplay loops quickly dissolve into highly repetitive and exhausting sector-clearing routines that offer zero mechanical innovation or true strategic depth. It feels more like a raw prototype framework than a fully realized, stable experience. While it successfully respects your active Steam showcase by completely omitting broken or grindy tracking achievements, it simply fails to respect your actual gaming time…

Project R2 is a pretty interesting little turn based robot strategy game, and I liked how much attention it puts on customization. I control a squad of combat robots and can change their different body parts before sending them into battle. The idea is simple, but being able to adjust the robots makes each one feel more like something I have built rather than just another unit on the battlefield. The combat is where the game becomes most interesting for me. Movement, ammunition, shields and repair kits are all limited, so I cannot simply rush forward and attack everything I see. I have to think about where I am moving, when I should attack and when it is better to conserve resources. I enjoyed this because the battles encourage me to make decisions before committing to an action. The robot customization also gives the strategy side some extra personality. Changing the arms, legs and core can affect how I approach a fight, and I liked the idea of building a squad around different strengths.
