Project Thea

I'm somewhat surprised to report that Project Thea seems to be turning out all right. I played the demo, right at launch. Calling myself disappointed would be a spectacular understatement, it felt like they'd thrown out most of the charm for a new setting that didn't have any of the depth or whimsy of the previous two games, and offered little more than visual variation. I'm pleased to say that isn't the case any more. This is a solid game. The biggest thing for me is the writing finally feels like it's closing the distance. I'm still not in love with the setting itself, but this feels like the [i]Thea[/i] devs at work again, though it's a more thoughtful, melancholic take - The world's gone to hell, after all. The early game also isn't absolute butchery on normal difficulty, which was the second issue I had. You're still very vulnerable, and I suspect certain class/species combinations perform better or worse, but the sting of failure is softened by the fact that they added a meta-progression system, so no run is truly wasted, even if it feels like the game is out to get you. If you played the original Thea games or similar games to this one, you will probably love Project Thea. I love the fact that it's different every time you play. One thing happened in an event last time and even though you choose the same path, you might get a different outcome. It's like a box of chocolates with a few pieces of hidden poop, you never know what you're going to get!

This is the slightest of thumbs ups, at least for now. And the only reason it isn't a thumbs down, is that they changed the name so does not ride the wave of the previous game to such an extent. Now this game is not Thea 3 the Merging (Or whatever they end up calling it). This is more like Thea, the cyberpunk spinoff that works very differently. The city you upgrade is the centerpoint for the map. But you don't build like in the Thea games, at all. Here you unlock building blueprints and simply spend time for it to be built, as well as using a build slot. Combat is now entirely focused around killing the others leader, i personally am not a fan of this change. But it works well enough. There is clearly a big focus on a main story here, with filler content around it. I don't know if the game will be able to stand on the foundation it has, but i am interested to see where it goes. Now the game is set to have it's 1.0 release within the near-ish future. The game is not realy ready for that, still a lot of things to iron out. However there is some solid gameplay here now. This game is really fun so far!

It is a good game, but early access needs a lot of work. Usability. Inconvenient control of resources and what they are used for. Dozen items of each tier of 5 types with random specs. I am specializing this minion in some skill, I get ability to craft a next tier item. I do not know if I will get an upgraded item to give him and I do not know what resources I will need before researching it. Trading incomplete. You can sell resources to HQ instead of storing them there. And buy out later. With a very inconvenient interface, Minion recruits in HQ are useless for now. Recruited may be one out of 30, it dropped moral. Though gave intimidation. Unbalanced tries. I have specialist in this kind. Why is it not participating? When he is, he will rise success chance to 150%, Midgame. Make a smaller chance increase, but select the strongest. No second group. May be coming in later update. Would be useful. What is going on on that visible tile, what resource is there, what is that enemy group strength and type? No way to check. Save, go, look, load. When crafting food, mining resource would be convenient to know how many of them I have in popup at least... Thea 2 was better for now…

Man, I clocked 70h, must be addictive! No glitches on Linux (Fedora PC).
