RPG Maker strikes again! Rebellion Gaia is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. This game opens with red flags, using quite a few antisemitic tropes and then when I dug in deeper and found covid misinformation, a cast of people peddling some of the most dangerous conspiracy theories and medical falsehoods that I have seen. Do not buy this game.

It's funny, simplistic, dificult, and entertaining throughout.

It should go without saying that this game is based. But being based does not necessarily make a game good. So, is this game any good then? I personally found it to be a very enjoyable experience but it is definitely an acquired taste. I have played many RPGs in my days and this one leans towards the more old-school mechanics of the genre. Healing items are expensive, so your best bet is to rest up at an inn which has the added bonus of removing your status effects. The early game is slow, and the enemies will give you a good pounding until you rack up a decent amount of experience and get better gear. I'd argue that the gear is more important since one of the unique things this game has going for it is the low value of levelling up. I beat the game and didn't even go past level 25. Keep in mind that I not only beat every dungeon and encounter in the game, but also spent a significant amount of time grinding. Grinding for gold that is. The importance of your gear over your actual level is an interesting, if perhaps unintentional aspect of the game. 50/50 on recommending. It's a weird & crazy game, but I'm not having fun cause the combat is way overtuned. I mean it's like the game is trying to be quirky and serious at the same time. The whole story is completely bananas, but then the combat interrupts the flow and is like "oh you thought you could just play for the story huh, lol get gud". Meh.
