About Shelter from the Storm

Introduction

The rain lashes down, soaking you to the bone. You spot an old, dilapidated house looming in the distance - a beacon of shelter in the downpour. You knock loudly desperate to escape the rain. No answer. You try the handle, the door creeks opens...

Point & Click

You play a curious wanderer who's stumbled into more than they've bargained for. Explore the forgotten corners of the once-grand house, now seemingly abandoned and shrouded in mystery. Find and make us of objects you find lying around, crack codes, solve puzzles and progress through the various rooms of the house while waiting out the storm.

Features

A classic 2D point & click adventure game with:
  • Simplified interactions - You don't have to randomly try combining every object. If you click on something and have an item you can use with it, you do.
  • Retro graphics - Kicking it old school with a low resolution pixel art style and a 4:3 aspect ratio. Widescreen will never catch on.
  • Manageable length - Tied of never having enough time to finish games? You can probably wrap this one up in about 30 mins.
  • Occasional humour - There's a joke or two throw in for good measure.

Being a thorough P&C adventure in miniature package, I rather enjoyed Shelter from the Storm. Putting aside the fact I actually got stumped at one point you could finish this free game in about half an hour. Simple premise - it's raining and your cloaked figure finds shelter at the nearby mansion. Why you engage in the conundrums is never explained. Simply passing time is as good a reason as any. Game does have an appropriately comedic tone from our protagonists own commentary, a genre standard, to the actual ending itself. That's really all you get in terms of narrative because it's actually the puzzles that get more of a spotlight. They're no mind-benders or such and you WILL spend more time than you thought gathering lanterns to exorcise a ghost, but almost all of it is telegraphed to you. Removing the need to combine items and automatically use them were applicable can lead you astray on one occasion where you just have to, well, realize you're carrying an ice cube in your pocket. What does ice tend to do? Yeah. My curveball was forgetting an early describing line about a faucet which was entirely on me. Moody atmosphere with pixel graphics and soundtrack set a clear tone…

A spooky, cute, and fun 30-60 minutes. The game is very, very fair with the difficulty, if you fail, you just respawn back in the main room, and you try again. I only had to look up two things, and those were mostly because I simply wasn't observant enough (hint: be sure to check drawers and bookshelves). If you like light-hearted but spooky point and click games, and want something that won't take you very long to finish, this one is definitely worth playing.

Fun little game, doesn't take too long to beat but that doesn't make it unenjoyable

Nice little point and click game with echoes of the old LucasArts creations. Only takes about 30 mins, but can't wait to see what the developer can do in a full length game.
