Sideway New York is not a bad game, but you should avoid this version. What the game does have is style. The art looks like something out of 2000's Cartoon Network, and the hip-hop soundtrack fits the game like a glove. Those are the most memorable parts. I also liked the level design, making good use of the "2D platformer in a 3D world" mechanic. However, even with cool music, the few tracks repeat so often that it gets annoying. I also had the game crashing multiple times, including twice on the last level. Finally, the major flaw, the unforgivable sin, is that the game feels sluggish. Sideway should be a fast-paced game, but the Steam version is arbitrarily locked at 30 FPS, no matter how good your specs are. Just look at gameplay videos to see how the game should be, then replay the video at half speed to see how this version is.3 found this helpful
Good premise, but the game runs like trash. Horrible Framerate.1 found this helpful
Sideway™ New York Pros - #1.Interesting art style #2.It reminds me of games like mario and mega man Cons - #1.I am not into action games like this that much Even to beat a mario game I would get bored after 20 mins to an hour #2.I could not get the controls to work properly but I only played for 20 minutes I would want to try the PS3 version just to see if the controls are better. The Bottom Line - I have no idea why I bought this.I guess I thought it looked unique which it is.I would buy the PS3 version only if I was you.The controls could work fine on pc but I do not care enough to find out.1 found this helpful
"How Do You Do, Fellow Kids?" The Game
A brilliant and creative game that did the whole 2D action on 3D surfaces gameplay mechanic before The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds or Super Mario Odyssey ever did. The levels are diverse and well designed, enemy variety is interesting, the attacks and move sets you unlock and can combine together are compelling and feel fluid, and the boss fights are creative and make good use of the game's various mechanics. The Rap and Hip Hop music is not really my cup of tea but it seems good for what it is, though fairly repetitive as it cycles two of the tracks per level but probably should have done more than that. The only really glaring issue is some random crashing on one particular level (Times Square) late in the game but other than that it was smooth sailing for me. Obviously something that slipped through the cracks in playtesting and QA. It may take a few re-tries but I was able to complete that level in its entirety multiple times. As far as the framerate being capped at 30fps goes, I think that was blown way out of proportion and people sometimes tend to focus to a draconian degree on technical details that are negligible in the end. This isn't like a multiplayer first-p…
Basically unplayable. Framerate is locked to 30 but the game itself seems to be running even slower than that. There is significant input delay to everything, even moving up or down lines in the menu. Speaking of the menu, pressing ESC just once to open it while playing will make it open and close several times, turning into a minigame to see if it will actually stay open or not. More fun than the actual game!
